REST. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 March 1898

RE5T. My feet are wearied, and my hands are tied, My soul oppressed — .And 1 desire, what 1 havo long desired — Best — only rest'. 'Tis hard to toil, when toil is almost vain, In barren ways ; 'Tis hard to sow. and never garner giain In harvest days. The burden of my days is hard to bear, But God knows best ; '~^%. - And I have prayed, but vain has been my prayer, Forrest — sweet rest. * 'Tis hard to plant in Spring, and never reap :. The Autumn yield ; Tis hard to till, and when 'tis tilled to weep Or fruitless field. And so I cry. a weak and human cry, So heart oppressed ;. ? And so I sigh a weak and human sigh, Forrest — for rest. JMy way has vyound across the desert years, '? And cares infest My path, and through the flowing of hot tears, I pine for rest, 'Twas always so ; but when a child I laid On mother's brea&t My wearcd little head ; e'en then I prayed, And now, for rest. And I am restless still ; 'twill soon be o'er ; For down the wett Life's fun is setting. an-l I...

[?] Written for the Hebrew Standard. JEALOUSLY.—[Continued]. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 March 1898

bww pa BY RABBI ISIDOR BRAMSON. ' Written for the Hebrew Standard. Jealously. — [Continued], Also you English brother considered the Foreigner too common. You must know that the Foreigners are for the most part noble and educated, and of the finest families of Europe. Everyone can understand that. When a stange you-sg man comes into these colonies, he has to go about 'a long time without doinj* any thing, sleeping in the park, and afterwards he tnanks God if he can get a position as a bootmaker, tailor, or if he can become a hawker ; in fact, he would do any thing to make a living. Everything that lives likes to live. His education and language are of no use or worth to him here. His noble breeding is valueless here. For what reason ? What is fine in Europe is here improper, and vice versa. People in these colonies accustom themselves to call him who cannot speak the English language correctly, ignorant, although he may be able to speak fluently in four or or five European languages...

The Battle of Life. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 March 1898

The Battle of Life. No man is indeed exempt from the risk of failure if he choose a path of life for which he has no special fitness, or if he encounters a storm of unfavourable contingencies ; but it is an encouraging thing for those who begin life ' under hard conditions, but with a brave heart and a resolute purpose to do their best, that, as a general rule, the sky clears as the day advances, and the troubles and struggles of the morning yield to success and enjoyment later in the day. The ruling passion, be it what it will, The ruling passion conquers reason still. It is nobler to be shabby and honest than to ; do things handsomely in debt. Subscribe to the Hebrew Standard.

WAS MOSES A MURDERER? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 March 1898

WAS MOSES A MURDERER? Exodus 11 12. If any one subject deserves more considera tion than another, it is this passage, which translators render, ' he looked this way and the other, and he saw there was no man, and he slew the Egyptian,' while the Hebrew says different: 'He turned so and so (^m DJl) and he saw there was no man (ww) and he struck ('pi) the Egyptian.' When we consider that Moses was the Royal Prince in the Egyptian court and that he con descends to go out thence to see his brethren, it at once shows the magnanimous character of the man. Bis heart palpitated with pain and anxiety, when he saw his people oppressed. For him personally the highest position seemed to have no value when the rest of his people were maltreated and trodden under foot. He goes out to see them and finds an Egyp tian beating a Hebrew, and he turned so and so, i. e., he began to think of it one way and the other. He did not turn pjtj*) j-jpj this way and that way, but n^i PD so an-* so. He pondered ...

France's Anti-Semitic Agitation. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 March 1898

France's Anti-Semitic Agitation. We are standing within the shadow of the dying years of the 19th century and in less than three years from the time this article appears in print, we will have entered upon the 20th century of which so much is promised to the world. Three years is no time at all in the life of the world— it is a mere passing era of which little or no account is taken. It seems remarkable that at this period of the world's history there should be so much bitterness, fanaticism, and uniust discrimination against a people whose entire history proves them to be loyal and patriotic to the country in which they make their home. And yet, in the Republic of France, that country which has always claimed to be the most liberal in Europe, we read constantly within the past few days of the terrible acts of cruelty committed by an unthinking populace against; the people of the Jewish race. If we were reading the history of Europe during the dark ages we could not find in it anyth...

CHEVRA KEDDISHA FORMATION OF A LADIES' SOCIETY.—ELECTION OF OFFICERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 March 1898

GHEVRA REDDISH A : . ? a- ? . Formation of a Ladies' Society. — Election of Officers. The Rev. A. B. Davis presided at the meeting of ladies at the Great Synagogue on Sunday last. In addressing the meeting the rev. gentleman, as President of the Chevra Keddisha said that the Society was being formed for a good object, and he would be glad to see the ladies taking an active interest in the work. He pointed out that the young ladies would not be asked to attend the last rites, but their duty would be to visit the sick in their homes, at hospitals, and simi'ar institutions. He said that he had noticed when visiting the various institutions that it was usual for young people of other denominations to provide the sick room with flowers, and he stated that as much as he was against the practice of sending flowers to a funeral he was quite the reverse in this re spect. Referring to sending wreaths he quoted .at length the grounds upon which it was not permitted to have flowers at graves, a...

Presentation to the Late Lord Mayor. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 4 March 1898

Presentation to the Late Lord Mayor. By all classes of Englishmen the great ^ ser vices rendered by Sir G-eorge Faudel Phillips as Lord Mayor during the Jubilee year have been esteemed and appreciated, and it is no wonder that the Jewish community should desire to especially do honour to their eminent co-religionist. A fitting present to mark this feeling was thought to be the late Liord Mayor s portrait in oils, and Jews, rich and poor, taking up the idea enthusiastically, the commission to paint it was given to Mr. Solomon J. Solomon, A.R.A., who has produced a magnificent like ness. Upon making the presentation, and at Bonn's hotel, Great-Prescott street, E., there was a large and representative gathering to witness the ceremony. The gathering was presided over by Mr. Emanuel Barnett, C.C. who was president of the committee, its vice presidents being Mr. Henry Harris, Mr. Wolf Joel, Sir J. T. Lipton, and Mr. H. W. Lawson, L. C.C, while Mr. A. Harris and Mr. Harry Barnett actfd re...
