Defective Telegraphs. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 10 April 1903

Itcl'cctivc Telegrapher I A Brisbane correspondent complains bitterly with regard to tho defective telegraphic communication between the Queensland capital and Sydney. ' I do not. remember,' he says, ' in my twenty vears' experience . of the wires, to have ever found them so bad as they have beer, during the past few monflis.' Among some of the reasons given for this aggravating condition of affairs the weather is, we believe^ the one chiefly held responsible by the telegraph officials. But, as our coriyr spondent points out, that excuse, broad as it may be, can scarcely be made to hold the whole bnrden of shortcoming. The chief causes are probably the press of cable business, which takes prece dence to all other matters, and the disgraceful state of the New South Wales lines, especially the one be tween Tnniworth.and Sydney. Sofar as can be learned, the Queensland lines are kept iu very good order, and it is with those of tins State that the chief fault lies. So bad, indeed, is the...

All through his Ministerial life when he has spoken he lias advised caution, and7 it is evident that on many occasions lie has had serious differences with . other members of - the Governineut ou matters of wasteful expenditure. , The.. EDUCATION. AVAILABLE COLONIAL SCHOLARSHIPS AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY. No. V. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 10 April 1903

EDUCATION. Available Colonial Scholarships at Oxford University. [By J. H 0. Harper.] (Per Favour of fclio ''It. R. Express.') No. V. In concluding those articles on tlie above subject, tho latter part of which I shall now deal with, it is apparent to your readers that thoro is a connec tion botweon that stop of attainment to a scholarship and education that is insuparable. Some years ago a con troversy took place in England on tho names of statesmen who ranked as Em pire builders. The then editor of tlie '? Pall Mall Gazette' mentioned Cecil Rhodes as one of a nuinbar of colonial statesmen' who shaped towards building up a greater Britain buyond tho seas. The supremacy of England to-day is un doubtedly traceable to the rapid growth and commercial expansion of her do minions, and the sagacity of hor promin- ? out men hns in a large measure contri buted. also to the extension of systems adopted in countries for the propagation of husbandry, which has added materiiil wealth to those l...

My weakness was so pronounced that for two moiiths I was co -.iinod to my bed; and tliero is no doubt that I had a spoil of terrible hardships. It was an uncommon thing for me to gut any sleep, as my brain was so un naturally active that I could do nothing but think and think till morning; and tlie worst part of it was that my thoughts were never pleasant ones. There was always trouble looming ahead in my mind, and, likely enough, my spirits sank to a very low ebb. Such a melancholy condition 1 had never been in before; for whatev...
