PATRIOTIC CONCERT AND DANCE [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 10 December 1914

PATRIOTIC CONCERT AND DANCE The ladies of the local Red Cross Society, who have been making gar ments, etc., for the soldiers, decided at a meeting recently to keep on with the good work. To raise funds for the purpose of purchasing a supply of material, it was agreed to hold a patriotic concert and hall. The event took place on Thursday evening last, and was a huge success. Miss Ethel Lidgard, a visitor from Queensland, came forward and took a prominent part in working up the entertainment. Besides local talent, several well known artists from Sale and HcyGeld were present, and the programme was un doubtedly one of the best p'aced tofore a Rosedale audience. The ladies were "out for the shillings" on Thursday evening. They had prepared a number of patriotic badges, also a quantity of dainty sweets (which were placed in pretty little red. white and blue baskets) and there were not many in the audience who resisted the pressing invitation "to buy," from the charming maidens who carri...

VALUELESS CHEQUES PASSED OFF ON ROSEDALE BUSINESS PEOPLE [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 10 December 1914

VALUELESS CHEQUES PASSED OFF ON ROSEDALE BUSINESS PEOPLE An individual, who went under the name of "Smith," succeeded recently in passing <ff valueless cheques, amounting to about £20, on to several of the Roseda'e business people. He stayed at one of the hotels (or about a fortnight and was quite an affable sort of gentleman. He was a "sport," too on other people's money-and . would lay bets of £ 1 and upwards on games of billiards, etc. After "sunning" himself about the street corners and other convenient places for a time, he commenced operations one morning and was missing in the evening. His method was to tender a cheque for about ^"2/10/to ^4/10/for a few shillings worth of goods and receive cash in exchange from his unsuspect ing victims. The cheques, which were drawn on the Box-Hill branch ol the English, Scottish and Australian Bank, in the name of "L. H. Smith," were returned a couple of days ago marked "Not known, no account, etc." A warrant, we understand, has...

PROSPECT Tuesday [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 17 December 1914

PROSPECT From Our Own Correspondent Tuesday Over an inch of rain fell yesterday and there will now be an abundance of feed for the visitors' horses for at least a couple of months. Fresh milk is expected to be a scarcer commodity than usual. Messrs Irvine and Curtis Bros, will not have a plentiful supply as hitherto, and unless some of the visitors bring down their own cows there will ba a shortage. The work done by those campaigners who generously gave a day out of their holidays la«t season to clearing Pros pect road resulted in a grant of ;£ioo. This, together with anothor iiioo earned in the same way, is being spent now in improving the track. Mr J. H. Bridges has the contract and is making good process with the work. The busy season has now set in and there is a fairly good attendance on the reserve. Several additional families will occupy m >st of the houses by the end of the week, while others will go under canvas. Tents are in great demand and will always be popular with ...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE COURIER [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 17 December 1914

TO TUB EDITOR OF THE COURIER | Sir,-The modest request of the I Shire secretary and engineer at last council meeting for a rise in salary has caused a little sensation, and no wonder, considering the present state of-the country. A great majority of the ratepayers consider the shire officers are well paid now for the work they have to do, and should the coun cil call for applicants for the positions referred to, I will guarantee the Shire council will find there would be dozens of competent men ready to take the positions for £50 a year less than what the officers now receive. There has been too much money spent about the Shire hall recently, and the farming community would be more satisfied if their rates were spent on the bad roads they have to travel. -Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. [Four other letters have been re ceived at this office in reference to the above matter, but the editor has refused to publish them. TO THE EDITOR OF THE 'COURIER1' Sir,-Through the medium of the COURIER I would liko to make a sug gestion to the local council re the rise in salary to tha secretary and engineer. The increase asked for by those officeis was, as your council report slated, promised when the recent sever ance was accomplished. By all means let the council redeem its promise, as the additional territory warrants the increase; but grant it op one condition, namely, that each officer hand over the ^25 to the Patriotic Fund while the great war lasts. The present is a lime of "self denial," and I am quite sure our worthy officers will agree to this proposal. -Yours, etc., PATRIOTIC.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "COURIER" [Newspaper Article] — Rosedale Courier — 17 December 1914

TO THE EDITOB OF THE "COURIER" Sir,-Might I be permitted to take up a small space of your paper, asking the ratepayers of Rosedale Shire, now that the question of "Rise in Salary" is before the council, to consider the ?question of "One Mao One Job," and urge their representatives to go fully into this matter so thru their well paid secretary and engineer will l,e urged to attend to council matters, and council matters only, instead of pushing in for little local appointments which would be a boon to poorer officers. Why, I am lead to believe that the "I'oor Widow" has been deprived of scrubbing the Shire hall. Our councillors surely will give that which is right, and probe into the matter before coming to a decision, -Yours, etc., TOWNSMAN.
