SHIRE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 23 June 1917

.SIHIRE ELECTION. Sir,-Permit me to reply to "Honest Toiler's" letter in your last issue, as a member of the Fairfield Progress Asso ciation. "Hd-nest Toiler" may rest cou tent that th makjority of.the Progress. Association di not for oie. moment think they have the sole right tpo run the town. Our object is to improve-not run--the town. " Houest Toiler's" statement: "I have been informed that no one be longing to the. P.L.C. would. hare a chance," is Uintrue, and " [Honest Toiler"': well knows it is untrue. I cordially agree with your correspondent when he states " there are just a§ good men and perhaps better outside the society as in it." I will go further, and-say that, as one who knows, there are just as able and intelligent men in the P.L C. as in the progress or any other society, and vice versa. Now, what's the matter with "Honest Toiler" P Is he the only honest toiler in Fairfield? If so, why not nominate for the next vacancy ? That is a privilege no society or body of rate...

TOPICS OF THE WEEK. METHODIST CONCERT. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 23 June 1917

TOPICS OF THE WEEK. METHODIST CONCERT. The grand concert held in the Ivanhoe Methodist School on Saturday evening last was a great success. This was ex pected when it was known that the ar ranging of the concert was in the hands of Miss Ethel Croker, L.A.B. There was a large attendence, and the efforts of the performers wereso much appreciated that with two exceptions they had to re spond to encores. The exceptions were Miss Carrie Lawson, who was indis posed, and Miss Duilcie Bland and Mr .T. Brady, who gave the Dialogue "A Q?ueen's Messenger:" The rendering of the piece was all that could be desired, but it was altogether out of place in connec tion with a church concert. The pro gramme was as follows:-" What of the Night," Messrs W. Davies and L. Ban field; songs, Prelude and "Love I have won you," Miss Dorothy Humphreys; dialogue, "A Queen's messenger," Mr J. Brady and Miss Dulcie Bland; songs, "A Romanian tent song" and " See, love, I bring you flowers," Mr L. L. Banfield; song...

What is a HoardingP THE NEW BY-LAW. At the council meeting on Tuesday sveaing, the following correspondence was discussed with reference to hoard mngs : From B. A. Fossett, asking permission td fix a hoarding on top of Tower Hotel for the purpose of advertising motor tires; from E. D. Cooke, asking to be allowed to retain hoarding at corner of Broomfield Avenue, indicating route to boat sheds; from W. E. Edmonds, ask ing permission to erect hoarding and calico signs to advertise picture shows. The committee recommended that the application of Fossett be not granted; agreed to Cooke's; and Edmonds was to be allowed to put signs at the hall only. Cr Price said that with regard to Broomfield avenue, the sign was being moved to another place. There should be some uniform system as to what is to be allowed. Objections are being raised in the Greensborough riding over it. Cr Coate said there was nothing offen sive about the sign, but some definite ruling was wanted. Or Rank-It is a busine...

LETTERS TO THEEDITOR. We do not hold ourselves responsiblo for, or identify ourselves with, the opinions expressed by our correspondents. STATE GOVERNORS. Sir,-This is the first time I have answered a nom de plume, but the signa ture" Coo-ee" draws me out. I am a thorough Aistralian. At the recent function referred to by " Coo-ee" I men tioned nothing whatever about dispens ing with State Governors on the score of economy, although perhaps it would have been as well if I had.?( What I did say was: With the continuance of our State Governors, federation is incomplete. I also said that the Legislative Council curbs hasty legislation, but from an economical point (the upkeep of the chamber) I favored its abolition, and I expressed the words economy when advo cating a substantial reduqtion in the number of members of the Legislative Assembly.-Yours, &c., O. SHERRIFF. Fairfield, 16/6/17. Sir,-Whilst honoring Cr. May at Fairfield on 2nd instant Mr Sherriff made no reference to eco...

The Returned Soldier. AN AFTER WAR PROBLEM. II. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 23 June 1917

The Returned Soldier. AŽN 4TER WAR PROBLEM. ,II. We have made the unhesitating assertion that one of the unmistak able duties we owe to the men who are fighting for us, is that we must return to them and to theirs all that is humanly 'possible of that which the war has deprived them. And this duty is providing such a pro blem that its solution can only be come at by the cumulative know ledge and experience evoked from scientific investigation and practical application and experiment. The preliminary lines upon which even an intelligent and fruitful enquiry may proceed will only emerge from thoughtful and sustained discussion. We further pointed out such en quiries would have better opportu nities of being prosecuted by bodies such as soldiers' welfare leagues, whose aim and object is to help and further the interests of our returned soldiers. The scope of the enquiry is a very wide one. Many consider ations have to be taken into account, and even the man who returns to us physiciall...

Playgrounds and Reserves. DEPUTATION TO THE COUNCIL. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 23 June 1917

Playgrounds and Reserves. DEPUTATION TO THE COUNCIL. At Tuesday's meeting of the council a deputation attended from the Progress Associatio's' conference for the purpose of explaining their views on the question of securing playgrounds and reserves. Mr Reynolds (president Heidelberg Progress Association) explained that the conference considered the time was op portune for securing playgrounds for children and reserves for the use of the public. It woald not be necessary to spend money at present, but the object is to secure the land. Many estates'are trying to sell land, and some may be bought cheap for this purpose. An idea was to get laind in the midst of ai estate that was likely to be built on, where al lotments were small. In Heidelberg they were on the large size, and there was not the same necessity for " lungs" as other places. The H.O.H. estate was an ilhlustration where it would be an ad vantage to have playgrounds for chil dren. In Mielbourne large pieces of land are bein...

Municipal Responsibility. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 23 June 1917

Ce e Ii) S. PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY 'MORNING SA'TUIRDAY, JUNE 2"3. Municipal .Responsibility. At onie-time the main duty. of shire councils was to administer funds in connection with ihe roads and foot paths, and the departments of gas and the electric light were consid ered as an adjunct to the shire busi ness, Most councils run as closeto the limit. of the bank overdraft as possible, which is caused by the con stant application of settlers for more roads and repairs. The Govern ment, which at one time was looked upon as the superior governing power of the State, is inclined to throw off the shackles in matters pertaining to municipal goverinment, yet still re taining the right to plunge into high finance, pay big salaries, have a two chambered, house with fine honor ariums for ilnemhbers, increase rail way fares, and show a big deficit onri its undertakings.
