THE MAIN DRAIN. Deputation to the Minister for Works. OnFridny, Sept 27, Mr James Ashton W.P., introduced a deputation, consisting of Alder men lilwin and Abrahams to the Minister for Works, to obtain a grant for conoreting the main drain through Maunders. Mr Ashton M.P. spoke at length, and urged on tbe Minister, the necessity of carrying out tbe work, from a sanitary point of view. He stated tae sewerage leom tne borough trent through the drain, and through the sides fallinu in, stagnant pools of Water collected there, and in Summer time it was a danger to health. He alsa produced a report from the local Government Medical Officer, Dr Fox, showing that the drain was a standing meuace to public health, whilst houses near the drain were uninhabited, owing to the former inmates being attsoked by typhoid fever. Mr Aihton produced the report of Mr Davis, officer from the Department, in which he pointed out the conoreting of the drain was necessary from a sanitary point of view. He also...

The Eight Hours procession to-day was one of the tamest on record, there being an apparent diminution of interest all round.
