We are glad to note that building is not »|0 a standstill in Gundagai. In addition to Ml?' M. Norton's spacious new hotel, and to Mr. W. C. Freeman's new premises, which aw both approaching towards completion, we understand that the brick work of Mr. Bauer's new premises, consisting of ..a. substantially built shoemaker's shop, show room, and resi dence is at once to be proceeded with. . Elsewhere we give the proceedings at a public meeting held in South Gundagai relative to the Common. When it, is considered how important the possession of such a. tract of land as the common and temporary common is to the residents, we can only wonder at' the apathy that has been. hitherto displayed with reference to this matter. ' On Monday evening an accident which might have been attended with serious conse ?quences happened at Mr. Freeman's now build ing, now iu the course of erection in Gunda- gai. A heavy girder which was being elevated, in consequence of some of the tackle giving way, fell w...

[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] SYDNEY, Friday 6 p.m. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 5 December 1868

I BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. 1 SYDNEY, Friday 6 p.m. Private letters state that Prince Alfred will arrivo in Sydney in October next. Messrs. Joseph Weame and William Camp bell are candidates for 'West Sydney. The news from New Zealand still continues gloomy. Six friendly natives were shot at Poverty Bay when the European force was pursuing the rebel Hauhaus, who have retreated. Tin-kettling a newly married couple is certainly a very silly, annoying, and disagree able old custom, much ' more honored in the breach than the observance ;' but wo do not think such grievous penalties are needed for its suppression as those Mr. Deputy-Judge Wilkinson inflicted at the late Albury Quarter Sessions. A man named Darby, and two youths callod Pettiford and Dennett hod been committed, for trial for considerably nnnoying the poundkeeper at Howlong on his wedding day in' thia manner, nnd his Honor, after stigmatising their conduct as most atrocious and unmanly, sentenced Darby, who was the ring-leader ...

' j-;! 'ME$sfqjfT(lJB f?EEK. Monday hist being St; Andrew's day was ?observed in many places 'as a general holiday. In Gundagai some stores shut and others did not. It is a pity that our men of business couldjiot agree to act with unanimity, and either all shut or all keep' open on such occasions. ? On Monday nn accident happened which might have _ inflicted upon Gundagai the ^serious affliction of being temporarily deprived of its legal luminary. As Mr. Perkin's was crossing tho flat his horse, being startled by thq noise of a passing, dogcart, bucked the learned gentleman off, and deposited him on his mother earth'. .' Mr. Perkins was some what bruised in the body, but -the legal intellect retained its usual perspicacity, the ^practised tongue its volubility, and instead of taking medical he was enabled to give legal advice next day.
