Sporting View Rose Has a New Living by John Musser Collegian Sports Editor -Its been a long summer, but not quite as long as the Pete. Rose fiasco has lasted. Unfortunately, it appears Rose's problems are far from over, as he faces a federal grand jury investigation for possible tax evasion on income from gambling and promotional appearances. If thats not enough to keep Petey up at night, perhaps the fact that his good name has been mentioned during the drug and tax-evasion trial of Tommy Gioiosa, a friend of Roses, will. I doubt that any of this bothers Rose, who was seen pushing autographed balls, bats and plaques on a Cincinnati cable network several hours after receiving his lifetime banishment from baseball. 1 guess he's got to make a living somehow. -Chris Evert has said that this U.S. Open will be her last tennis tournament ever so that she can concentrate on her home life with her husband Andy Mills. While Chrissy may no longer be at the top of her game, she certainl...

Should campus police be armed? Police and students have difference of opinion by Cindy Craig Collegian Staff Writer Randy Hoffman, manager of Bchrcnd Police and Safety, in marked disagreement with much of the student body, thinks his officers should be allowed to carry firearms. "If you're going to ask people to do police functions, shouldn't you give them the tools to do so?" - Randy Hoffman Police & Safety Manager "I don't want to do the thing where I wave the magic wand and all of a sudden everyone's wearing guns," Hoffman told The Collegian. But Hoffman would like to see the force become armed in the near future. A poll of 170 students indicates most arc opposed to armed officers on campus. When asked, 131 students felt Campus police should not carry guns. Students expressed concern that campus officers might not have the proper training to carry firearms.
