Taking French Leave at Bio . For the Newr-York Clipper . A SAILOR S YARN . BT GAME . It was Christmas evening , and as I sat on deck with ray humble meal of biscuit and , water ih ray hand , and cast many a longing look towards the oity , where everything seemed mirth and revelry , for even the poor negro slaves had liberty on that day , I bitterly contrasted , ray present meal with the . mammoth turkey and attendant good things that would be * demolished that day in ray far off home among the limestone hills of Pennsylvania . / And . these are the pleasures of a sailor s life , thought I . % 0 r % ptoi Home Department . THE GREAT CHARLESTON REGATTA . lmerestingftrial of Speed . From the Charhston . Courier , Nov . 24 . THE REGATTA—FIRST OAV . The elements yerterday were singularly propitious and seemed to conspire in working together to afford us a lovely day for the commencement of our boat racing sports . The day was one of the balmiest and mildest we have yet had throughout the bright visitation of the Indian Summer with which we have for some time been favored . Tho only possible objection the most fastidious could have found , was on thejscore of temperature , which , for the season , was almost too Summer-like ; but this was felt but in a slight degree , and only by those who were compelled to stand for some time exposed to the sun s persuasive beams : It was , in short , a balmy Mayday—calm , bright , and effulgent : the heavens above displayed their clouddraperies through the pure and achro matic atmosphere , and the waters below lay sleeping like the passions...

The report of the Boston Corners fight , sent to Bell s ^ ife in London , was published in that paper on the 6 t h of November , and seems lo have created considerable excitement , SuIlivaoJuiitg well known in England . The remarks of the Editor of Bell s Life , which we publish below , it will be seen , correspond with the remarks of the Clipper , published at the time of the battle . As much anxiety has been manifested to hear the opinion of the Editor of Bell s Life on the decision of the Referee , we give it , as taken from that pajjijfcof Nov . 6 th : The sudden decision of the referee took all by surprise , as Sulltvan ,-et the time , had all the best of the fight ; And if continued for a f ew rounds more , Morrissey would have been blind . At the time appointed for the men to commence business , the streets in the vic inity were thronged with the sporting gentry and others anxious to witness the race . The men however were backward in comingorward , different excuses being made by the different parties , the barkeepers at the porterhouse where the pedestrians quartered being kept as busy as bees , handing out a little something , and hauling in a little more . And thus matters progressed until the people becoming disgusted with the management of affairs , left the ground , fully satisfied that Messrs .
