AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 July 1868

AGRICULTURAL Natural History of the Cow . At a recent meeting of the American Institute Farmers Club , Dr . J . V . C . Smith read a paper on the Natural History of the cow . Among other things he said that no one in his senses presumes to question the dietetic properties of milk , it Is the food provided for the newly born animal , from which is elaborated material for the completion and development of Its organic machinery . There Is no other product from any source in nature so extraordinary in composition . Huge frameworks of bones , muscles and nerves are fabricated by vitalized tissues from elements held in solution In that won derful fluid , which is directly secreted from the circulating rtood . Milk never inflames the mucous membrane of the stomach or disorders the Intellect . It meets the , demands of our organization and conduces to serenity of mind and long life . The modern refinements of the table make disastrous inroads upon human life . Highly-seasoned dishes cannot ...

i wmuoni t coaaromioM AGRICULTURAL , [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 July 1868

i wmuoni t coaaromioM AGRICULTURAL , , < » a . More Turnips WantedThe high price of mta-bagas In our city markets , the past Spring , ( two dollars a bushel at retail , ) shows clearly that the supply is not equal to the demand . Rutabagas can be raised for twenty-five cents a bushel , and the round turnips , as a stolen crop , for less than ten cents . Farmers away from the large markets pay very little attention to this crop . It ought to have a place upon every farm where hogs and cattle are kept , without reference to city markets . Of course , If turnips go up to 75 cents or more a . bushel , it will ordinarily pay better to sell them than to consume them upon tbrs . farm . But if prices are low , the former always has a good market at home . Most of the turnips raised In England are turned into beef , mutton and wool , . before they are sold . Our cllma e is not quite so favorable as the English for this crop , but we have never found any difficulty in growing satis...

The Cattle Plague , or Rinderpest , 1 Some excitement has recently existed In Illinois , caused by the supposed outbreak of the cattle plague , but any professional person of sound judgment who had sufficient opportunities of studying this malady was not likely to be misled by such rumors . It Is well , however , that American formers should know something of the laws which Influence the spread of this disease , and of its nature and symptoms , as they will be less likely in future to mistake some malady peculiar to their own climate for the formidable cattle plague . The cattle plague Is eminentl y a contagious disease , and it is owing to Its contagiousness and to its v...

HORTICDLTPRAL . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 July 1868

HORTICDLTPRAL . Blight of the Pear Tree . The pear tree is subject to three kinds of blight , upon the nature of which there are some differences of opinion among pomologlsts . Thf first or roost serious Is the flreblight , called by some the pear tree blight . Then there aw the insect-blight , and the frozen-sap blight . All these have nearly a similar effect , causing the sudden death of the leaves . and brandies . The fire-blight generally appears early in the season , and sometimes nttacks only branches , at other times . It destroys nearly tbe entire tree . Flre-bllght Is occasioned by a fungus , which germinates on tbe bark , and pushes its way gradually through the tissue , consuming everything it comes in contact with . Sometimes it does not entirely girdle a branch , and then tbe leaves do not die suddenly ; at other times , the branch is completely girdled , and all the leaves die at the same . time . This parasitic fungus is propagated by minute seeds called spores , and ...

gtotMtfr tottfmg [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 July 1868

gtotMtfr tottfmg Edited by a Praetleal Housekeeper Canning Fruit . I This we call a very simple process when rightly understood . We always have an abundance of the small fruits put up in glass jars . We think the trouble less , the fruit better , and less expensive , than by the old process of preserving in sugar , pound for pound . We use the Spencer jar with a a japanned cover , and a rubber ring around its edge . We heat the fruit to a boil in a bright tin pan ; have the jars filled with quite warm ( almost hot ) water to warm them ; pour out the water , and dip the boiling fruit rapidly into the jar , until it comes slightly above the shoulder In the Inside of the neck of the jar . The end of a string , about one-eight of an inch in diameter , Is dropped inside on the fruit , retaining the other end in the band . Now crowd In the cover down on to the shoulder , at same time withdrawing string and the woik Is done . Any extra juice or air will follow out with the string . Those ...

Agricultural Societies' Report . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 July 1868

Agricultural Societies Report . We learned wltb surprise , from a private letter , that the writer supposed we had intended , In our notice of tbe Secretary s Report of the Michigan State Board of Agriculture , to hold the Secretary responsible for the delay In issuing the Report . Nothing was further from our intention . We stated that , probably , the delay was mainly owing to tbe printers , and called attention to the fact that the Secretarys Report proper was dated in 1867 . Where information or reports are to come from a considerable number of persons It is often nearly Impossible to secure returns in proper season . We had , on more than one occasion , in noticing other and similar reports , made similar statements as to the importance of hav ing them promptly issued , and we are still fully convinced that it would be a decided improvement if they could be so issued . We bore testimony to the value of the essays contained in this Report , aud only stated a well known fact that...
