Columbia Club . • One of the annual events to which our students look forward with unmixed pleasure is the regular autumn visit of the Columbia Club of Philadelphia , to Gettysburg . They made then , appearance for this season very quietly on last Saturday . It was not until late in the afternoon that the news of their arrival became general among the boys . Hasty anangements were , however , at once made to be present at the usual exercises in Urua Chapel . At an eaily hour in the evening the students began to assemble before the Eagle Hotel , and to greet the friendly visitors with the irrepressible College yell . a beautiful display of fireworks in front of the Hotel followed . A novelty among the fireworks was paiticularly attractive to the students and on-lookers . It consisted of 5000 shooting crackers tied together and arranged so as to make a string about 15 feet long . It was lit at one end ; and then began such a deafening noise for several minutes as has seldom been heard...

The Spectrum . Literary enterprises of more than ordinary magnitude are not , as a rule , launched in a college community without more or less discouragement in the way of indifference , criticism and sometimes positive opposition . More than ordinal y courage and determination are required on the part of those who wish to bring plans for such enterprises to successful issue . We may be thankful that Gettysburg College has had men who were not afiaid to launch out upon the unknown and unexperienced ; for , as a result of their efforts , we have to day three publications which compare very favorably with those of any other college in the State , publications in which we take a just pride . By no means the least important of these three publications is the College Spectrum , or Annual , the eighth volume of which is now being published by the Class of 1900 . The Spectrums of former years , although varying among themselves in degrees of excellence , have been very superior publication...

TI 112 subject treated under the head of a Neglected Privilege it the _GcrivsiiUKGiAN of last week , seems so thoroughly deserving and so much in keeping with the piogrcssivc spnit which during the last year or so has been decidedly noticable in the student activities , that we can not pass it by without once more refening to it . It is possible that the supposed cost of some permanent memento is the greater obstacle in the way of a general considciation of the suggestion by the classes It is erroneous to think that such a memento must necessarily be costly . With a little effort and thought some little need of the college could be found , and one whose cost would not exceed the amount which a class would be willing to contribute for such a purpose . This custom is successfully cai ried on at other institutions , and why should it not at Gettysbuig ? Let some membeis of each class bring the mattei up for considciation at the next class meeting . If the idea is favorably received the...

vigilant in his efforts to turn out the best team possible . The manage mcnt is to be congratulated on having obtained such an excellent coach and it is our hope that Mr Johnson will act in the same capacity during the ne \ t foot ball season . TT seems necessary that something should be said concerning the desJtiuction of pioperty aiound College , as icccntly a number of windows in the old dornutoiy have been broken and also a fire made of wood on the second floor , east division would have burnt a laige hole through the door and probably done worse damage had not one of the students put it out . That the students should see to it that no windows aie biokcn is to their own inteiest for the Boaid of Trustees has threatened to impose additional expense upon the whole student body , and the innocent would have to pay the same as the guilty . The student or poison who made the fiie in the hall of the doimitory should by all means be dealt with seveiely if found out , foi such an action...

_ATHLETIC NEWS . L A Wbiglr _, oo t Reporter The work this week has shown that the new arrangement of the team , as made just before the F . and M . game , is _cleaily better than before Young is getting back into his old form at end , and Rugh is developing into a fast half-back . Gilbert is quickly learning his position at tackle , and Brumbaugh and Deveney are both good line men , so that we need not fear for that part of the team . In geneial the play has been _charactered by more snap and energy than heretofore , and the offensive work has improved greatly , especially in a noticeable absence of fumbling . Coach Johnson is unable to stay with us any longer , and on Monday left for his work . We are sure that the best wishes of every Gettysburg boy go with him . He is one of the best coaches we have ever had at Gettysburg , being himself a good player , and having the ability to impart his knowledge to the team ; and in addition to this , is a good felloiv , and has been very mu...
