THE DAILY DISPATCH. RICHMOND. YA.t i Friday Msraiag, February 4, 1853. THE ORANGE AND ALEXANDRIA EX TENSION. Before our Senate shall have definitively de cided to "cut the carotid" of Virginia, we ask its attention to the following paragraph. It is from the Alexandria Gazette, the most clamo rous of all the papera for the proposed connec tion : Baltimore claims to I e the Queen city of the Cheanpeake, and scorns all comparison with tisir Virginia cities. Yet, taking Louisville or Cincinnati as points ot Western connection, each of our tide water cities, from Norfolk to Alexandria, is accessible by shorter and better routes. Why, therefore, should we fear a competition with Baltimore? There are some obvious reasons. Baltimore lias the start of us. She has a vast commercial connection, already established. She owns a large ship ping interest. She hat the capital. Not the least of her advantages consists in the grant of 1847, under which she has built her road to the Ohio. The Gazette ...

THE DAILY DISPATCH. RICHMOND. VA.t Katarday Morning, *ek. 5, 1853. THE PAMPHLET OF MR. ALEXANDER J. MARSHALL. The Examiner, more fortunate than our selves, has gotten possession of the letter ad" dressed by Mr. Marshall to the Mayor and Council ol the city of Baltimore, and we find in yesterday's issue, a very clear and distinct analysis of its contents, preceded by a short narrative of the circumstances connected with the application of Baltimore for the right ol way. The Examiner would have conferred a benefit upon the public had it found it consis. tent * ith its views of its duty to its readers, by publishing it entire. The transaction is one upon which the people of Virginia, and their legislature, ought certainly to have all the in formation possible. As it has not done eo, how ever, we must folio* its statement as nearly as we c§j>. It appears, then, that after the Baltimore and Ohio Company had been repeatedly defeated in iheir attempts to obtain a charter, mainly through...

THE DAILY DISPATCH. EICH IHOND . TA.i Nsaday N*ra(i|, Kehriarj 7, 1833* MR. A. J. MARSHALL AND THE BAL- TIMORE AND OHIO COMPANY. We learn from the Alexandria Gazette, that • memorial ia in circulation in that city, pray ing that the Legislature appoint a committee to investigate the case presented by the con troversy of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company with Mr. Marshall. That is certain ly what the Legislature ought to do. Such a committee would not have far to send for per son* and papers. It need only get a certified copy of the case in the United States Court, in which the company have made good their plea of fraud. The investigation would not take fifteen minutes. The cape wculd be decided t~v a mere inspection of the record. Oral testimony would be altogether unnecessary. Strong as is the interest of Baltimore in this Legislature, we hardly think they will subject themselves to the scandal of refusing to ap point the propel committee, and upon its re port, to instruct th...

THE DAILY DISPATCH. KICHMONO. TA.i WetefMlir Maralag. Feb. t, 1853. SERVING ON JURIES. Our friend of the Petersburg Express, in connection with the time consumed io the trial cf Wormlej. speaks of the hardships which it infills apon the jurors. This is true enough, but it is a part of the price which we pay lor cur free institutions, and which, we should think, every freeman would pay with perfect cht-erft.lnesg. It is a natural and inseparable consequence of that noblest of all Anglo- Suxuu inventions—the trial by jury. If we •wtte disposed to dispense with this great pri v,.tge, we might, at the same time, get rid of tnt- inconveniences attending it. In Cuba, they Kk age such matters far more expeditiously in-..; «e do here. Ten minutes are sufficient for the trial of any criminal cause.
