J High Priced Books. One of the most Interesting book tales that lias taken place for many years in London was that week of the large, choice and carefully selected library of the late Dr. Laing, of i-dm burgh, the well-known Librarian of the Signet Library, one of the most acute and indefatigable collectors of old Dooks ever known. Extraordinary prices were obtained, though not higher than the rarity of the works merited. The six days sale realized nearly A'1,000, and son.e wonderfully scarce works were disposed of. A copy of the first edition of "Don Quixote," with the author's corrected text, 6aid to be the finest and most perfect in existence (Madrid, 1008), fetched 1S9. A beau tiful two-volumed copy of the "Brevi- arium. Secundum Kitum Roman Ecclesia cum Calcndaris'" went for 93. Marquesas Maa-eatrs 'IV the people of Marquesas, really practice man-eatUg at the present day" was asked of some late visitors to that lo cality. "Oh, yes," the reply, 4-it is still very common amongst them. We even saw remains of one of their "horrible banquets in the valley of Ilanalapa. I think the custom was falling into disuse a half century aeo, but during the past twenty-five or thirty years the frequent visits of whalers cad traders upon the islands have bad a demoralizing effect upon the natives. The women have been debauched and the men let into the secret of distilling a kind of rum from the cocoa trees. When intoxicated they cemmit the most revolting barbarities, and become embroiled in con flicts between themselves. While in this condition they become worse than beasts; the hereditary man-eating instinct seems to be revived, and breaks out stronger than ever. Any of their numler who are killed in these drunken bioils are sure to be eaten. They also eat the Ixxlies of th...

Commemorative Fans. To begin with France, we meet with the first satirical fan in Mme.du Barri's time. The ornamentation of the leaf is in the ordinary style of the period a figure medallion in the centre, Cupids on clouds, with flowers above; but, when closed, the fan assumes the i-liapeofa washerwoman' beetle, in allusion to the Marquise s decent. 1'receding the Revolution the repre sentation of court scenes and royal por l raits 6ccni to have been favorite sub jects for commemorative fans the mar riage of Louis XIV., and the portraits if Marie Lcczinska, i'ieen of Loul: IX V., of Triuce Comic, Comte Artois, f Louis XTI. associated with XecVer, prominent amongst vhein. AUDITOR GENERAL, JOUi A. LEMOX, or BLAtB COriTT. A certain get of men have gone vigorously to work, to manufacture public feeling against the present board of county commissioners. The motive of the men at the head of the movement may as well be loft undis cussed at this time. They attempt to create an unfavorable feeling against the commissioners by trying to make it appear that promises had been mode that the expenses of the county should be reduced. Without having knowledge of any definite promises, it does appear, by a com parison of the accounts of the coun ty for the years 1878 and 1879, that a great reduction was made by the Commissioners in the year 1879, on the cost of the year 1878, on the cost of such things that could not well be affected by times or circum stances ; anil, as far as the fores...

Criswold Stubble. Frum time immemorial, and indeed, oven Ion" before the commencement of that epoch, if we may place any faith in the papes of story writers, heroes were aud are to this day in the habit of receiving rich lcpacic left them bv old bachelor uncles, who, good-naturedly, and in a spirit of pure philanthmphy, it would seem, die on purpose to make their nephews happy. I had jut fallen heir to a small fortune left me as a frail memorial that I once had an uncle of just such a sort. I was a young man at that time, a clerk in a merchant's office with plenty to do at a handsome fortune of three hundred dollars er annum, and positively no holidays. A desire to live in the country and be a far mer had always possessed me from my cradle; so when my uncle's property made tie independent, the old boyish longing came upon me in all its strength, and over whelmed me with pleasant anticipations of futurity. Well, I was aione in the world, and my own master now, which is more than most...
