Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, k; May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! This month of June begins vacation time for many of you. School will be out. It will be a joyful time of families reuniting. Perhaps for you summer will mean a long trip to some foreign land or perhaps you will opt to see the beauties of our own country. Camping in the woods and mountains may be your way of returning to pristine nature and “refreshing” yourself after a long year of hard work. But wherever you travel or however you spend this summer, may these months of June, July, and August be a time of great peace, rest, and happiness. May God keep you safe and sound in body and soul. Be assured that you will be daily in our prayers, especially in the daily celebration of the Divine Liturgy. We do not issue INSCAPE during the months of July and August, but will resume in September. Thank you for your faithful support o...

BAPTIZED IN THE SPIRIT AND FIRE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

BAPTIZED IN THE SPIRIT AND FIRE T. S. Eliot wrote, “We are alienated because humankind cannot bear much reality.” Such alienation is the predominant experience that surrounds us and pervades our own lives. We are becoming familiar with scenes of thousands of refugees in mass movement, torn from their native roots, to live in an “alien” land in great poverty and human suffering. Today we find this phenomenon of alienation in our own disintegration, lack of inner harmony, and meaninglessness. Spiritually, we are estranged in a material world from a God who seems hidden to us and silent to our pleas. We are somewhat like the disciples of Jesus after his death on the cross. Their hearts were cold. They were frightened. They had had such great hopes pinned upon their Master, Jesus. And now he was dead as were their dreams. They needed new fire implanted in their hearts.

THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Jesus had promised them he would send them his Holy Spirit to be their inner power. He would bring to their consciousness everything that Jesus had said and done (Jn. 14:25-27). The same Spirit would empower them to become witnesses of Jesus just as the Spirit bore witness to him (Jn. 15:26). That same Spirit would unconceal and unfold the plan of salvation to believers in Jesus and give them true judgment according to his plan. The world's sin is disbelief. The Spirit would expose that and would lead the follower of Jesus into the complete truth (Jn. 16:715). Jesus, after his resurrection, appeared to his disheartened disciples and promised to baptize them in his Spirit “John baptized with water, but you, not many days from now, will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5). “....You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem, but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ...

HEARTS ENFLAMED WITH LOVE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

HEARTS ENFLAMED WITH LOVE Filled with the Spirit, they went forth to witness to this inner transformation with hearts enflamed with the Spirit of love. They preached and witnessed to the risen Jesus. They performed mighty signs and wonders of healing and miracles. Peter preached to the astonished Jews that “what you see and hear is the outpouring of that Spirit” (Acts 2:33). In that descent of the Spirit, Peter, the leader of the eleven, became anew personality, as did the other disciples. He had formerly been a coward. He adamantly avowed to Jesus that, should all the other disciples betray Jesus, he would never! Yet, a little later, Peter denied ever knowing him, and more than once. With the Holy Spirit, this Apostle now had an inner fire of Love within his heart. He was no longer alone, but the Almighty Spirit of the risen Jesus now dwelt within him. From this inner power, he announced the Good News so that his listeners could also be led to such an interior experience if they on...

FIERY LOVE INCARNATE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

FIERY LOVE INCARNATE In the Old Testament God’s Spirit is depicted as a wind and a breath, the ruah, that is God’s presence as power—fresh, dynamic, harmonizing the entire universe. This Spirit of intimate love is omnipresent. “Do I not fill heaven and earth? It is Yahweh who speaks” (Jer. 23:24). If God’s Spirit is a mighty wind of love blowing over all creation, a brush fire spreading over all, how much more is the Divine Fire concentrated as in the flame of an acetylene torch when God’s Word leapt forth from out of the bosom of the eternal Father and “pitched his tent among us”? (Jn. 1:14). St. John the Evangelist climaxes the progressive dwelling of God’s Spirit of love among his people as he describes the Word enfleshed for us: “....and we saw his glory, the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth” (Jn. 1:14). Now God speaks his loving Word and builds his tabernacle to dwell among the newly chosen people of Israel in the person of Jesus of Nazar...

THE SPIRIT SANCTIFIES US [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

THE SPIRIT SANCTIFIES US The Good News that Jesus came to share is that the Kingdom of God is truly within us. That Kingdom is the hidden, indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Our Baptism initiates and activates an embryonic relationship with God whereby, through the inner operations of the Spirit upon us in faith, hope, and love, we become more and more aware that live anew life in Christ Jesus. This indwelling Holy Spirit infuses our hearts with his fire and teaches us how to pray more deeply. He leads us beyond our idols constructed about God to live in the mystery of the circular movement of the Father, Son, and Spirit inter-love relationship. He bears witness to our spirit that we are really children of God (Rm. 8:15; Gal. 4:6). The Spirit leads us ever deeper into our heart where an abiding sense of sorrow for sin and fear of ever losing the mercy of God create a contrite and humble heart. Broken from the spirit of egoism and independence we humbly turn in our poverty towar...

THE SPIRIT UNFOLDS INNER MEANINGS TO GOD’S WORD [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

THE SPIRIT UNFOLDS INNER MEANINGS TO GOD’S WORD In prayer, the Holy Spirit continually reveals to us the deeper meanings of the Word of God as revealed in Holy Scripture. The Word becomes for us “something alive and active; it cuts like any doubleedged sword, but more finely; it can slip through the place where the soul is divided from the spirit, or joints from the marrow; it can judge the secret emotions and thoughts...(Heb. 4:12-13). In such an infusion of knowledge and understanding of the God’s Word, the Holy Spirit opens to us the treasures of the mysteries of faith. God is alive and always in the process of revealing himself through his Son in his Spirit. The Spirit reveals to us all we need to know about the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. In our oneness with the indwelling divine life, we can easily discover this same “unconcealing” divine life all about us in all of creation. True Christians cry out constantly for greater release of the Holy Spirit in order that they may...

THE WORK OF THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

THE WORK OF THE INDWELLING HOLY SPIRIT Amidst so much darkness still living within and outside of us, the Spirit reveals to us that God has saved us “by means of the cleansing water of rebirth and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit which he has so generously poured over us through Jesus Christ our Savior” (Tit. 3:4-7). This indwelling Spirit of the risen Jesus brings us into direct contact with the spiritualized Body-Person of Jesus risen, who dwells also within us, along with the heavenly Father. Jesus promised he would come with the Father to abide in us as in a mansion (Jn. 14:23). As we yield to such a dynamic fire of love pouring over our consciousness and the deep layers of our unconscious, we experience anew freedom as children of God, loved so immensely by God himself. Fears and anxieties are shed as we experience new power to love, to be “toward” God and ourselves and neighbors.

BRINGING FORTH THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

BRINGING FORTH THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The presence of the Holy Spirit within us is not a delectation to be enjoyed without any reference to daily living and growth into greater life as children of God. Fire begets fire; love begets greater love. It is through the Spirit that God, who is love, is able to communicate to us the power to be loving, filled with joy, abounding in patience. He empowers us to put on the mind of Christ in all our thoughts, words, and deeds. The work of the Spirit that dwells within us is to pour out the love of God into our hearts since he is given to us (Rm. 5:5). The outpouring of the Spirit is the filling of our hearts with the love of God. We are able to love at each moment with the very love of God that abides within us. “Anyone who lives in love lives in God and God lives in him” (1 Jn. 4:16). The love of God through the Spirit gradually possesses our hearts. It is the same love with which God the Father loves his Son and ourselves as children. W...

SENT TO BUILD THE BODY OF CHRIST [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

SENT TO BUILD THE BODY OF CHRIST Through the on-going experience of being one in Christ as living members of his very Body, the Spirit prompts us outwardly not only to discover Christ in others but to labor incessantly to bring Jesus forth in their lives. The Spirit is the builder of the Body of Christ. “There is one Body, one Spirit, just as you were all called into one and the same hope when you are called” (Eph. 4:4). In the earthly life of Jesus, whenever the Spirit is associated with him it is in the light of Jesus' mission toward others. As the Spirit anointed Jesus to preach, heal, and perform miracles, so he pours out his Spirit upon us, his followers, that we might also be anointed by the same Spirit to share in the mission of Jesus. The Spirit is poured into our hearts not only that we might rejoice in the good news that we are God's children but that we might go out and share the good news that all human beings are called by God to become, through the Spirit of love, also...

CONFRONTING THE WORLD WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

CONFRONTING THE WORLD WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT We Christians in the Spirit are not to run from the world but are to be “ambassadors of Christ/ 7 bearing the Word of God to others. The Spirit dwells within us (Jn. 14:17), and we are to be Christ's witnesses to his Gospel values by our lives of Christian love and unity. We are to be led by the Spirit of love.

THE TRUE TEST OF LIVING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 June 1997

THE TRUE TEST OF LIVING IN THE HOLY SPIRIT The degree of our surrender to the inner guidance of the Spirit is proved out by the life we live and the fruit we bring forth, as Jesus so often insisted in the Gospel. If we have consciously touched the inner fire of God's love for us, the Holy Spirit, we must be transformed into fire. This fire will suffocate if it is not allowed to move outward toward the world and toward other human beings in loving service. True love of God will always be true love for other human beings. Ultimately, only one love exists: the Spirit of the Trinity bringing forth within us a “graced-love” relationship. The truly charismatic Christian is a contemplative who has been transformed into a living incarnation of God's love for humankind. Let us love one another since love comes from God....everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Anyone who fails to love can never have known God. As long as we love one another, God will live in us, and his love wi...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 September 1997

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! I hope and pray that you and your family have enjoyed a restful vacation and are ready to settle down into a more regular pattern of life. September is a transitional month. You experience still a few warm, perhaps even hot, "summery" days. Yet there is the soft, gradual or sometimes the chilly suddenness of overcast skies and cool days and nights that tell us summer is gone and fall is upon us. Fall is a time of harvesting the crops in the fields. It is a time for reflecting on our own harvesting to come, according to the seeds of love we have planted and cultivated by our efforts to die to selfcenteredness to live in love of God and neighbor. If the fall of our years is already upon us, can our winter be far away? Perhaps we in times of trials and tribulations do reflect occasionally on the end of our own earthly life and...

THE END OF THE WORLD [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 September 1997

THE END OF THE WORLD There has always been in the hearts of us human beings a desire to ponder what the future of our lives and of the entire world will be. Today, more than ever, with advanced technology available both creatively and destructively to advance or set back the development of our universe, we moderns are becoming even more concerned about the future. "Futurology" is the science that seeks to understand the future and to provide tools whereby we can obtain greater control over our destiny. The surface of planet Earth is exploding with developing sciences and technology, but the efforts to harness these skills to develop the earth's resources and to share them with other inhabitants in peace and love have met largely with uncoordinated helter-skelter results.

ESCHATOLOGY [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 September 1997

ESCHATOLOGY The difference between sheer science about the future and what the Church teaches in its knowledge about the future of the world is the difference between simple growth toward fruition and the need of something new to enter into the process and bring about the final end. Jesus Christ risen is that something new, that life-giving leaven, that has entered into the potentiality of the universe. This is what is called in theology eschatology, (from the Greek words, eschaton , the end, and logja, the study of). This part of theology studies from Holy Scripture and the teaching and praying traditions of the Church and raises questions concerning the end of our lives and of the entire world. It usually concerns such questions as death, judgment, heaven, hell and puratory, resurrection of the dead and the parousia or the second coming of Christ.
