▲ Constitutional Convention. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 5 March 1860

▲ Constitutional Convention. It seems as if the politicians and schemers of California will never rest coutented until they have been given an opportunity to so re-arrange our constitution as to make oltices more numerous and to add to the sum total of the spoils of party. The Senate Committee to whom the matter was referred, have decided that the people by their votes last fall, called a Constitutional Convention, and a bill is to be framed providing for the holding of such Convention in August next. We very much doubt the wisdom of this step. There is hardly enough of the consciencious element in California yet,to make it safe to tear open the organic law of the land and have it run the chance of being harmed more than benefitted. To be sure our system of Judiciary is cumbersome and intricate, but the question arises, had we not better suffer the inconveniences of that system to running the risk of having other parts of the constitution rendered still more objectionable than at pr...

The Races at Sewell's. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 5 March 1860

The Races at Sewell's. There was a very large crowd in attendance upon the race at Sewell's on Saturday. The day was a beautiful one for the purpose, and the race gave much satisfaction to all who did not lose too heavily. As at all quarter races, there was much chaffering and delay, and a good deal of small betting aud some big. About five o'clock, the nags were led out, and walked up and down their various tracks. It was arranged that each horse should have thirty feet to "turn" in, and that all should go at the tap of the drum which musical instrument, in this instance, was an old tin pan in the hands of "Hoop-pole White.'' After two or three false starts, the horses got off, and came down the track "like shot off a shovel." The horse entered by Steve Ford, of Wyandotte—the "B. P.," (Benjamin Phranklin) or, as Steve styles him. "Overland," won the race by thirty or forty feet—coming through the "poles" at a dashing and furious rate. The judges awarded the second best place iu the...

[From our own Correspondent.J Sacramento Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 5 March 1860

[From our own Correspondent.J Sacramento Correspondence. SACRAMENTO, March 3d, 1800. EDITOR APPEAL : —The political buzzards having subsided, and the greater portiou of them having returned from whence they came. The Legislature took rather a lively fit yesterday and to-day, and did something worth talking about. The Senate, 011 yesterday, passed a new gambling act, fixing a penalty of not to exceed a thousand dollars fine in lieu of the present somewhat stringent one of imprisonment in the Penitentiary. Every man should fie allowed to regulate the internal affairs of his purse in his own way : and if one chooses to play a game of any sort with another who is his superior in skill, and bet his money upon the result, who cares it lie loses ; or who demands the incarceration of the winner! in a dungeon. Bulwer says, "It is not criminal to gamble, it is criminal to lose," and. although 1 do not accept him as a teacher in moral ethics. 1 confess that, in the matter under consideration, ...

ihe gtoiln appeal [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 5 March 1860

ihe gtoiln appeal THE ONK THOUGHT. —A friend once told me that, amongst other symptoms of high nervous excitement, he had been painfully harrassed by the want of sleep. To such a degree had this proceeded, that if, in the course of the day, any occasion led him to his bed chamber, the sight of his bed made him shudder at the idea of the restless and wretched hours he had to pass upon it. In this case it was recomtneuded to him to endeavor, when he lay djwn at night, to fix his thoughts upon something at the same time vast and simple—such as the wild expanse of ocean, or the cloudless vault of heaven —that the little hurried and disturbing images that flitted before his mind might be charmed away or hushed to rest by the calming influences of an absorbing thought. Though not at all a religious man, at the time, this advice suggested to his mind that if an object, at once vast and simple, was to be selected, none could serve the purpose so well as that of God. He resolved, then, to ma...
