T H E J EW ISH MONITOR Friday November 26 1920. lieved profoundly in the destiny of the Jews. . The new government ha made sev- eral important changes and improve ments already. An abundant supply of water for Jerusalem comes by aque- duct from the same supply of the Pools of Solomon about ten miles Q;uth of the city. Very strict sanitary laws are en- forced. The hospitals for treating the blind are the best The land is filled with the blind. Because the mothers are so ignorant the children are ter- ribly afflicted with sore eyes. The very best nurses and doctors are here in numbers. There will be no more -leprosy all the lepers have been Vtthered out of the land and the men placed in one asylum and the women in another. No more marrying among . the leppers. Results of Archaelogy Through subordinate bub by no means unimportant will be the dis- covery of countless monument! which so rich a history has bequeathed both above and below the ground. Friday November 26 1920. THE JEWISH MONITOR a descendant of the rabbi. At any rate he was a modern man. We may think well or ill of the Prussian government One thing U certain it was efficient. Its influ ence on the Jews is best tested by the fact that the Jews living in that sec- tion of the country which has now ' again become Polish are fleeing to Germany as fast as they can. When Prussia occupied that section of Pol- and it first began to encourage secu- lar education and how well it suc- ceeded is best proven when we com- pare the conditions of a city in tho Prussian province of Poscn with any city of the same size in Galicia or in Russian Poland. When Jaffe was a child in 1825 the Prussian Minister of Education issued an order which de manded that every Jewish congrega- tion establish a secular school in which only teachers possessing a gov- ernment certificate were permitted to teach or send its children to Christian schools. When a Prussian Minister said something he meant i...

Friday November 26 1920. THE JEWISH MONITOR Twenty-One clerical labor. It is a collection of ab- stracts from the official documents issued by the popes. For the benefit of those who might regard such a work as merely mechanical I shall quote the remote analogy that a plain bookkeeper could not make an inven- tory of a hardware store unless he knew the business especially. Jaffa's book was so scholarly that the pope received him in audience and thanked him for his work. This was already after 1848. The law would have per- mitted Jaffa to obtain a professorship but he was clearly told that law was one thing and sentiment another. We know it in America when we think of the theoretical qualifications for the presidency of the United States and of the sentiment in case a Roman Catholic an avowed free-thinker or a Jew should be a candidate. Jaffe who was devoted to his calling gave us hope and turned to the study of medi- cine. He might have been successful as a practioner but he was not...

Friday November 26 1920. T H E J EW ISH MONITOR Twenty-Three results. The plan is extremely simple and not only easy but a pleasure to carry out. Upon the entrance into the service of new young women certain ones among the older employe are selected to be the big sisters to the strangers. The big sister practically takes Charge of her new associates whom they call the little sister and iQkes everything she can to make her feel at home to encourage her and to help her. The big sisters enter into the spirit of this with great enthusiasm and are amply rewarded for their effors in the interest shown and progress made by their new friends. The importance of this one feature .of telephone work cannot be overes- Mimated. It is practical a proven suc- cessful undertaking and the resultsv are unquestionably far reaching. . Whenever possible there are roof gardens to which the operators have access during pleasant weather and it goes without saying they are verj popular places. Another decide...

Friday November 26 1920. (Continued from Page 23) dupe of those who are plotting inter- national schemes and are making the Jew the scapegoat We do not ex- actly see the scheme that makes the spider's web in all this sad time though we suspect that it is the at tempt of the reactionary monarchists in all the countries of Europe to come back to power by convincing the ignorant masses that the present democratic representatives of the people of Germany Russia Hungary and even England are in the power of the Jews are Jews themselves or are lending themselves to Jewish schemes for the development of a Jewish supergovernment of the world. They deliberately are planning to .ride again to the throne of power upon the stream of Jewish blood. Contents of Protocol. What we are laregly concerned about of course is the dastardly at- tempt being made in this country to sow hate and suspicion between dif- ferent sections of our American citi- zenry. And therefore we will only review the calumnies...

Friday November 26 1920. THE JEWISH MONITOR Twenty-Seven " CONGREGATION EMANU-EL The beginnings of Congregation Emanu-El can be traced back to a - movement begun in the year 1871 to meet the need which the residents of Dallas felt for a centre of their Jew- ish devotional life. But it was only on the first of July 1872 that at a meet- ing of the Jewish people an organiza- tion was formed under the name of The Hebrew Benevolent Association. The organizers of this society were Moses Ullman Alex Sanger A. J. Rosenfield Dr. E. M. Tillman H. Goldstein F. H. Baum L. Jonas B. Meyer A. Dreyfuss A. Prince and G. Burgower. On New Year and the Day of Atonement of the same year the newly formed congregation held ser- vices. At about the same time the cemeiery on a Kara street was acquir- ed and remained the cemetery of Con- gregation Emanu-El until the year 1886. The first Sepher Torah was bought for the congregation in 1874 and in the same year out of this nu- cleus Congregation Emanu-El was f...

THE J EW IS II MONITOR Friday November 26 1920. . . . . (Continued from' Page 25). Washington D. C on Oct. 13 of this year in the course of which the fol- lowing unmistakable language is used: "The toleration of persecution whether social or political based on religious differences is incompatible with brotherhood or the essential spirit of Christ" Challenge to Christians. It Is therefore a challenge to the Christian pulpits of America. Are they ready to fight that form of the devil as they are any other form of anti-Christiaity? That is the chal- lenge to yon who believe with all your hearts in the man of Galilee and in his teachings of love and gentleness and mercy. What will you of the Christian pulpits do with all the pow- er of your voice and influence? Will you after clear proof brand these documents a brazen forgery! The Christian in England has done so. Will the American Christian even be- latedly do sot Will you brand as an outrageous lie that there exists a body either in ...

Friday November 26 1920. T H E J EW ISH MONITOR Forward By Rabbi David Lefkowitz Dallas Texas. Without the formality of an instal- lation service which I understand is to be carried out next fall in connec- 0 tion with the dedication of this Tem- ple this is really my installation ser- mon and must in some way sound the keynote of my ministry here in Eman- uel and Dallas. It is therefore to me a solemn hour. I still have in my ears and heart the words of love with which my own congregation B'nai Yeshurun and the city of Dayton bade me fare- well and here the words of welcome (Q have been wanting neither in sinceri- ty or warmth. My ministry in Dayton however unworthy yet has brought me and mine the fruit of real love and respect from my own people and the city generally. May I hope and pray that at least a measure of what came to me in Dayton may crown my work and ministry here in Dallas. Such is my heartfelt prayer unto the God of our fathers to whose service my en- tire life is de...

THE JEWISH MONITOR Friday November 26 1920. gentlemen to work together for the purpose of affecting a lasting organ- ization and build a synagogue where services should be held at least on every Sabbath. On the suggestion of Mr. S. L. Meyer one of the three still living charter members it was decided to 0!ame the new congregation "Shaar- ith Israel" which means "The Rem- nant of Israel" and is taken from the Prophet Zcphania 111:13 where be says: "The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity." When the number of those enthus- isastic workers reached twenty an application was made on April 2nd 1886 to J. W. Bained the then Sec- lOfctary of State for the State of Texas for a charter. The petitioners respectfully asked "that they be granted a charter for the purpose of establishing a Church (meaning syn- agogue) and the maintenance of a private cemetery." Of the following l!st of names in- scribed on the Charter only three Mr. M. Wasserman Mr. S. L. Meyer and L. Goldman are still with u...
