AN AWKWARD DILEMMA. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 28 December 1883

AN AWKWARD DILEMMA. o-- Curious complications brought about by twin brothers and sisters have formed the subject of many romances since Shakesajeare wrote the Comedy of Errors The latest, a romance of real life, is reported by the Nero York fines, in all seriousness, from Mil waukee. Miss Matilda Pope, a young woman of 29, appeared at the office of a magistrate named Benzder, in oider to be married to a young man named William conlin, who said he was just 21. The ceremony was performed, the couple departed, and Judge Bendler expected to hear no more of them, when he was surprised; only two or three days afterwards, by a visit fromn Mrs. Conlin. The bride wanted a divorce, her plea being that her husband had committed perjury by "swearing that he was of age. On closer enquiry the truth came to' light. The ex.-ias Pope had, she informed the justice, been married to the wrong man. There were, she went on to explain, twin brothers named Conlin, and she wanted and had intended to marry t...

LIFE ASSURANCE AND MURDER. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 28 December 1883

LIFE ASSURANCE AND MURDER..,. It would not perhaps be just to say that our insurance system offers a pre miumn for murder, but we have heard it suggested that, if some of the second or third rate insurance concerns in lancashire were to exercise a little more caution, the deaths resulting from poisnning which are imputed to the avarice, or greed, or something worse, of a Mrs. Flanagan, would have been nipped in the bud. It is something very shocking to read the details of what will live in history as thd Liver. pool poisoning cases. It is asserted that this woman insured the lives of several people, but one by one they "dropped off' and were buried without further inquiry, and then she revelled itn gin, beer, and other excesses, out of the proceeds of the insurances, which were paid to her without question or suspicion, the doctors' certificates that the victims died of inflammation of the intestines helping her to perpetrate the hellish fraud. " Stones have been known to move, augu...

YARRA FLATS RACES. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 28 December 1883

YARRA FLATS RACES. The Evelyn Turf Club race meeting at Yarnr Flats took place as announced by poster issued fromm this office, on W ne sdJ ast, and, considering the liberal gt mme, proved a fair suc cess. T hr rice meeting has for many years past been termed the Yarna Flats Races, and was chiefly supported by local horses, but great alterations in connection with the racing have been made, and we consider, taking a rough view of the matter, alterations have been made void of any improvement. It now bears thetitle of "Evelyn Turf Cloth," racing, this year, under the V.R.C. rules and regulations, with much .higher prizes distributed to the winning sportsmen than on any pre vious occasion. iong prir to the timets announced for starting the first race people in. vehicles and people on horse. back began flocking towards the point of rendezvous, and Iby the title half past one o'clock arrived the picturesque little course, situated opposite Farrell's Hotel, and kindly lent by Mr. Thomas ...

SUMMER IN ROME. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 28 December 1883

SUMMER IN ROME. Rome is no longer given uip only to the endless' train of larts with building materials which' lnbour up three of her seven hills from different points. The scene is now diversified by omnibusses full of arrivals and laden with luggage passing from the railway, station to the hotels. The stout handsosme women of the Trastevere and the Monti, real Romans who do not hesitate to trace their genealogy up to Romulus and his brigands, may also be seen enjoying their October Thursday andt Suuday drives in the handsomest hired lsmdaus to be procured, in which in their best dresses'and covered with gold orna. ments, but without bonnets or veils, they reclinle with as stately airs us the most fashionable princess of the day. Yesterday I saw evidently as whole society of these laundresses, greengro c. reases, and sausagemakers' wives drive along Via Nasionale in half-a dozen large carriages, reclining three in the back seat of honor, and two in, front. As many more carriages co...

At the banquet given to him ini Sydney Earl Roseberry said :-I should wish to say a word to those of my im mediate fellow countrymen-my fellow Scotchmen-(cheers)-who have done me the honour to ask me here to-night. I have observed with the greatest pride and the greatest pleasure the honour whichispaid toScotlandin this country. (Cheers) While I was at Brisbane there was a bank holiday, which was extremely inconvenient to some, but which I rejolced in when I discovered that it was. a tribute paid to St. Andrew's Day-(cheers and laughter). -and I have some reason to hope that it was due not merely to the traditional reverence ,paid to so distinguished a saint, bitt also to the weighty character of Scottish deipote in that institution. (Laughter.) l observed with delight also that the names of Scotland are cherished in this country. (Hear hear.)
