Hospital Ball. [Newspaper Article] — Narromine News and Trangie Advocate — 1 September 1899

Hospital Ball. The anoaal ball in aid of the Dnbbo Hospital, took placn on Weducsday, tbe 30th of August, and was in every way an undoubted success, in fact, the attendance was so large as to seiioasly inconvenience the movements of the dancers, once more emphasizing the necessity for the erection of a hall suf ficiently large fur the rapidly increas ing requirements of Narromiue. Still tbedancerp, mindful no doubt of the sacred cause of charity, bore with the inconvenience with the most heroic fortitude, and though tbe atmosphere was the reverse of frigid ; seemed de termined to extract the maximum amount of enjoyment. In future fnnctions of the kind it would be as well to make different arrangements for the disposal of spectators, as it was only with the greatest difficulty the dancers could strng^le through tbe densely packed on lookers when making their way to the body of the hall. Tha scene as the hall was entered was a very pretty one, the artistic efforts of Mr. Beaton and th...

THE CATTERPILLAR PEST. [Newspaper Article] — Narromine News and Trangie Advocate — 8 September 1899

THE CATTERPILLAR PEST. Mr. F. Glassou on Tuesday morning brought to the Bathurst ' Free Press' office a few live samples of the black hairy caterpillar which is committing such devastation in other parts of the colony, and which has recently made its appearance^in the neighbourhood of Bathurst. The pests are to be found in fairly large numbers near the hos pital and the park adjoining, and are apparently making north. On the old Orange road, between tbe Rocks and Dunkeld, they are to be found lying dead or crawling from south to north. Those who have any curiosity in that direction may inspect the samples brought by Mr. Glasson to this office. Recent telegrams indicate that these caterpillars are causing much damage in Riverina and in the north-west. A telegram from Hay says that the Riverina is being visted with another plague in the shape of a scourge of caterpillars. The Coonamble 'Times' sayBt— ? We hear tbe caterpillar plague, which has been very severe- in this district, where...

Mr. Neild made a vigorous speech in reply to the allegations made against him. Mr. Barton declared federation was safe whether Reid remained in office or not. He said he never supported the Government on their general policy, and asserted that Neild's payment alone justified their expulsion from office. The Premier followed with a bril liant reply. Vagrant Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Narromine News and Trangie Advocate — 8 September 1899

Vagrant Notes. Contrary to expectation, the crisis in the Transvaal Beems, within the last few weeks, to point most unmis takably to war. The Queen at Jubilee time is said to have expressed a most fervent wLsh that the last years of her reigu wonld not be marred by bloodshed, bat present indications are certainly against the likelihood of her hope being fulfilled.. The transparent excuses and vexatious delays made by the Boer Executive are merely for the purpose of gaining time. This is pal pable enough, for many prominent Uitlanders assert they saw trucks loaded with stores and amunition at every station between Johannesburg and Natal. England is making the same mistake in this affair that she las so often done before, allowing ber magnanimity to overcome her pru dence. What other nation of her power would parley so long for the just rights of her subjects. The Narromine band, after a brief period of inaction, caused, we nnder stand by temporary internal dissension is once more in ...
