After a hearing extending over some -months by the Queen's Bench Division, before Mr Justice Bruce and a special jury, Mr Jabez Balfour whs to-day sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment for complicity in' the extensive frauds in connection with the Liberator Build ing Society. Mr Justice Bruce, in ~*^- sentencing Balfour, said *the accused'' was a master mind among the prisoners, - and had planned frauds whereby he bad made millions, the others being merely-, his tools. The outcry raised by certain sections of the community against the Forrest Government for their aofion, or, as they please to term it, inaction, in the matter of water supply, is .in many cases based upon ignorance of facts. There is no doubt in the mind of the candid observer that .at the present time the Lvalgo irlie 'district; is being thoroughly tested as to its resources in the matter of a supply of salt water. Within a radius of five miles of tho town' the Governmcnt'boring parties have established a net- work of water shafts, with the object of. testing the country and of the people availing themselves of what supplies exist. Two miles east of Kalgoorlie is what is known as No. 1 bore, whence the present supply ? is derived.
