(T' do n(ot n0rc0ssarily edrlorse Ie o?,ions of ore c,')rre~· ponl nts.) THE INS.\NIl'ARY CONDITION OF ST. LEONARDI)'S OAD. (To the Editor Ilealesrille Guardian.) SIr,-As summer is near at hand, and that means the season when fever and kindred germs are floating about in the air, wherever polluted by bad drains, carilessly kept sinks, &c., I think it i. the duty of our health otfi cer to see that they are kept in a dif ferent stiste than they are in St. Leonard's Road at all everitt, and another great source of danger is the way our nightpans are emptied and not emptied. Thb 'usual time they are left is two weeks, but sometimes they are left three and 'four weeks without any attendai'ce of our nightman. The pans are sometimes left till they are flowing O\'er, and when this is the case of course the consequence can be imagined, as it is ut6st decidedly a hot bed for all gernis. Now, I hope, for the sake of the residents of Heales vifle, as well as our summer visitors, you wil...

No Title [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 29 September 1899

In an interesting article on the Lord Chief Justice the " British Realhnm says ;-At the art of browbeating a witness he had few- equals. In fact, at the, time of his great successes, the late Fred Leslie used to convulse a Gaiety audience by exclaiming, in a mock trial scene, to his opponent, " Don't you come the Sir Ctharles over me." On another occasion, however, he met his mnatch most unexpectedly in a comparatively uuknowun counsel. It was Sir Charles' habit on occasions, if he wished to frighten an opponent, to pretend that the latter's o atory arous'.d in him nothing but the desire to slumber. IHe nodded visibly in his seat with closed eyes, intimating to the judge and jury that the rival counsel was merely wasting the time of the court. A conscious man was in voluntarily abashed by this. Very often the jury were impressed by it. Mlr. C. F. Gill, then only known in thecriminalcourts, made his reputation. and at one stride stepped to the fore most rank by shouting out, " Halloa...

TOOLANGI. September 24. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 29 September 1899

TOOLANGI. (From our Correspondent.) September 24. An estimate for the construction of the railway from Yarra Glen to Too langi has at last been prepared by the Department, hut as the Minister ccn siders it too high, the matter has been referred hack to the officers for a fe duced estimate, on the completion of which the line will be introduced to the House. No doubt the Kinglake residents will now bestir themselves in the right direction, as their only chance of obtaining railway communication is via Toolangi. A deputation of inte rested sawmillers will shortly wait on the Minister to further urge the speedy construction of the line. Rabbits are becoming fairly nume rous, aind fears are entertained that in a sh?dct time they will become a nruis-: atcei ts it is a difficult niatter to get at them, owing to the thick cover: A large number have beenr trapped around Toolangi House, but apparently they have come to stay. Several newcomers have lately put in an appearance, and great thing...

The STANDARD [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 29 September 1899

The STANDARD says-" The diety lene gas light has been introduced into Woodspbint. Mr. Renwick has this unique and brilliant illuminant, while Mir. Morgan has also aupplied by the same means the want of ' more light.' Note : Now that Or. Raymond has again returned to the council; and the Woodspoint municipal phalanx is com pletei, why may not our street lamps he lit by this powerful light, especially as it is said to he cheaper than kerosene T" Sooner or later the acetylene gas light must supplant that of kerosene, and it is to be desired when that time arrives that Healesville will accept the idea of substituting in lieu of the pre sent inadequate lighting service, an illuminant such as that nen tioned.
