THE FEMININE. , l A difficulty has arisen at Edinburgh ?: University as to the eligibility. of ladles; to: study for the LL.B, degree. -Two i young ladies (writes the 'Westminster Gazette'), one the daughter of an Edin burgh solicitor, and holding the M.A. degree of the University, and another young lady who is still studying in the Arts faculty, have this session presented themselves for enrolment in several of the law classes, attendance at which qualify for the LL.B. degree. The art student can attend the law classes, 113 they are optional for the Arts degree, but with the graduate the case is differ ent, as she has intimated that she is attending for the express purpose of the law degree. Some of the professors hold that the University, as a teaching body, has no concern with what use is made of the degrees after they have been taken, and that consequently the ladies should not be debarred from attending, while others say that as the Law Ex amining Hoard and the Law Societies do...

At the Surrey Assizes, Guildford, John Purdy, 3S ,a dairyman, of Croydon, was indicted (says 'Lloyd's Weekly') for stealing L93, belonging to his wife, Lucy Flora Purdy. Lucy Flora Purdy, the prosecutrix, said that in April last she inserted the following advertsement in a local paper: — 'Superior person, with small private means, aged 38, would like to correspond with widower or bachelor.' Prisoner an swered the advertisement, and they met. Ho asked her how much money she had got, and she told him she had L130. She then said to him, 'How much have you got?' — (laughter)— and he replied, 'The same as yourself.' It was arranged that they should get married in July, but the day before the wedding the prisoner came to her and said that the ceremony could not - take place, as the servant in the houso where he lived had threatened to commit sui cide if he got married. Thero are 1-1 ports in what is known as the '? North Coast district. As showing the in- , dustnal wealth, the following totals of tho chief, agricultural products shipped to Sydney during July may be quoted : — Maize, 38,258 bags; butter, 22,872 boxes; pone - 3.095 „««--« ? nlns. S.89S ; notntoes. ' : 9G0: bags ; millet, 231 bundles ; bacon, 10,200 sides ; and molasses (from the three mills), 78,772 gallons. Some big incomes are made in dairying here. Everything is on large lines. Those who combine general farming with dairying probably take most out of the land. One of these, who farms 110 acres, estimates his yearly income at £500.
