THE DISPUTE IN THE WOOL TRADE. THE SELLING BROKERS' POINT OF VIEW. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 16 September 1898

THE DISPUTE IN THE WOOL TRADE. THE SELLING, BROKERS' POINT OF VIEW, The following statement was prepared for tho press by the Sydney Wool Selling Brokers' Association : — ' Our association is quite willing at this stage to put forward their statement of tho case, but seeing that tho dispute has been one between the buyers and the Coopera tive Company, in which our association wa9 not involved, there is ab-olutely no reason why we should linvu had anything to say in public on the matter. Seeing, however, that our further silence may be misconstrued, we are prepared to place fairly before llu pub lie the true facts of the case. In the Tfirst place it may be well to refute the* statement that has been made thnt this dispute' has been bronght'aliovt at the instigation ofjthcr Selling . Brokers' Association.' This; is entirely untrue. Mr. Learoyd (the cli'air man of the Buyers' Association) has atated - the case with perfect fairness nnd accuracy, and wo can only -supplement :ivfintv, ho...

Influenza Priivnlcnt. INCREASING MORTALITY. Official statistics show that considerably over one death per day from influenza is taking place in N.S.W. alone, and that it is equally in evidence in the sister colonies our contemporaries there disclose; Deaths from influenza have, and are playing no small part in swelling the mortality list. Very fre quently these deaths are in the fir3t place due to carelessness, for the primary cause of influenza is cold in the chest and lungs. 1£ these simple ailments were attended to in time, the trouble would possibly end there ; but cold in the head and lungs, unless care fully watched, brings on fever and debility ; fever and and debility lead to prostration and heart disease, aiid prostration and heart disease lead to— death, No wonder is it that at so many inquests lately the coroner's ver dict has been ' Death resultant from influ enza.' Having explained the evil after effects of this dangerous ailment, we have now to chronicle theii care. Mr...

III i'iii'lianient. Sydney, Wednesday. The petition was referred to the Electors nnd Qualifications Committee. jur. u auiuvan inovcu uie iiujouuuiicui, ui the. House to complain of the inconvenience caused to the public by the absence of the Minister for Works, who is electioneering on behalf of Mr. Sydney Smith at the Hastings. Mr. Crick declared that it was a gross outrage on the part of Mr. Young to im properly absent himself from his oflice. His conduct warranted a motion of ccnsure against the Government. The Speaker said that the House of Commons has resolved that it was highly criminal for any Minister to directly or indirectly use the power of his oflice to secure the election of a candidate to Parlia ment, It appeared that Mr. O'Sullivan' wbb inviting this House to lay down that rule in ii!a mnlinn. wliiidi Mr. Cri...

DISTRICT 3STEWS. ('From Onu Own Cokukspon dents.] Finley. ' September 11. I Doubtless your Traders will be surprised ; to hear that the official opening of 'our'| railway litis been postponed till 30th inst. The cause of the postponement is tliat' the Minister of Works is anxious to go electifin eeriiig in support o£ Barton's opponent for tne Hastings ana wacieay envision, so no quietly and calmly shelved his visit till n week later. Had it not been for Mr. Hayes we may probably uot have heard o[ his wrigglings. However, our citizens are very indignant at the idea of a common Minister preferring to assist a pal rather than have the honor of being invited to this beautiful city to guzzle champagne, and if they had him here at present tliey would shove him in tlie boro but for the fact that we ain't got one. , Withal, some of our more sober residents have counselled waiting for bis august pre sence till 30th inst., but if he dilly-dallies -after that date they intend to get some of th...
