RULES FOR FEEDING COWS. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 24 October 1912

IRULES FOR FEIDING COWS. Some hints on feeding cows are given in a bullettn issued by the Win consin Agricoltural Station. Put briefly, it is to the effect that each cow should receive as much roughage as she will eut up clean, and a por tion of this shonhi preferably he of a succulent nature, like grass silage, solling crope, or roots. As regards concentrated foods, it has been found a good working rule to feed as many pounds of grain feeds per day to each cow as she ipodnces pounds of but ter fat a week, or one-fourth to one third as much grain as she given pounde of milk daily, the amount de pending upon the percentage of but ter fat in the milk. In the cases of cows producing milk with a low per centage of fat, one-fourth would he required. Care should always he taken to avoid an increnae in body welrht show **. * - .*,,a ror ma h cow, since the 'milk secretion na a general rule, is likely to sulffer when cows commence to uttlise their food for the formation of body fat.

LIVE STOCK. TYPE IN CATTLE BREEDING. WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE HEREFORD. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 24 October 1912

LIVE STOCK. TYPE IN OATTLE BRIUIDING. WITH SPEOIAL REFERENCE TO THE HIHEREFORD. From the "Farmer and Stockbreeder.' It is obvious to anyone who has entered the lists of pedigree stock raising that the closer approximn tion to typo by a breed, provided that the characteristics are quite in accord with its commercial claims, the more sulccessful that breed is like ly to he. There are innumerable instances which prove that any great divergence between the commercial market and the fancy standards set up inevitably work for the undoing of a race of stock. The Hereford breeder has been very purposefal in his methods. He has not been led away by passing fads and fancies, and has refused to prostitute the qualities of the famous white-faced race of cattle. It is for this reason that the Hereford enjoys such a splendid demand from abroad, and maintains its position in Great Bri tnin as the premier grazing race. It is necessary to consider the point of view of the bredler in as suming how cl...
