THE EXAMINATION OF THE HAY I PUBLIC SCHOOL. i [Communicated, i ! On Friday, 20th inst., the Local School Board attended at the Public Srhoid to examine the progress the scholars had made in the various subjects to which their attention bad been directed during the past year. There was about thirty-six pupils present — several hav ing been prevented from attending through various causes. ; The Chairman of the Local Board, W. E. Twynam, Esq., although labouring under severe indisposition, presided. He opened the proceedings - by calling the attention of the children to the fact that the Board had met to assist the master, Mr. John Hunter, to award the .. prizes— a very handsome collection of books, which had been very kindly given for the occasion by James Andrew Livingstone Learmonth, Esq., of Groongal. SPECIAL MEETING OF MUNICIPAL COUNCIL. Thuhsbay, 19th December. Present.: Frank Johns, Esq., (Mayor), Aldermen Sabine, Threlkeld, Tartakover, Pollard, and Witcombe. The Council met to consider the resolutions agreed to at a public meeting held at Carter's Crown Hotel, on Wednesday, 11th inst., as follows : — (1.) A DESERTED FLEET IN THE ARCTIC. An American paper publishes the following private letter from Cap tain William H. Kelley, of Ding hampton, who was captain of one of the fleet of whalers deserted in the ice at Point Belcher a year ago, and is again in the Arctic Ocean in command of a vessel. The letter is dated ship James Allen, August 12, 1872, and says :— ' Thinking you would like to hear from the Arctic, I will take the opportunity of sending by the schooner Maria, all the news con cerning the ships left at Point Bel cher last year. The barque Min erva lies at the entrance of Wain light Inlet, as good as when aban doned in hull, but her cabin is marred considerably. She lay on the edge of the beach, and she swung inshore clear of the heavy ice which grounded outside of her, and she re ceived no damage. The one pnblic means of recreation provided for our little town was a picnic, winding up with a ball at night, devised and carried out by a few gentlemen — the surplus after paying expenses to be devoted to the Hospital. SUPREME COURT, SYDNEY. Friday, December 20, 1872. Ritttwis iw RAwnn. Before their Honors Sir Alfred Stephen, C.J., Mr Justice Cheeke, and Mr Justice Faucett. (From the S. M. Herald.) IN re moselet, gentleman, one, &c. — ATTACHMENT. Mr Henry Stephen moved that a rule nisi for the attachment of the respondent should be made absolute. Mr Cohen for the respondent, asked for a postponement. Mr Moselev resided at Denili quin, and the copy rule had been served on the 12th inst. Since service of the rule only eight days had elapsed. Mr Henry Stephen opposed any postpone ment. In September last there had been a rule nisi taken out, calling upon respondent, who was an attorney of the Court, to show cause why he should not pay over a certain sum of money. No cause had been shown and the rule was made absolute in due course. The Chief Justice : I remember the case very well ; and I now desire publicly to ex press my opinion that this man ought to be struck off the rolls. It is perfectly...
