N.S.W. BUILDERS' LABORERS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

N.S.W. BUILDERS' LABORERS. Although. 'the Builders Laborers' Federal Award only applies to 170 master builders in N.S.W., and, therefore, affects only a very small proportion of the ?workers, their union has decided to abide by it. Tliis decision was arrived at yesterday afternoon, and, if it be carried into effect, it will be interesting to note what policy the State Government will adopt in the matter of enforcing respect for its own award. Minister Griffith, of course, intends observing the Federal Award, and in voicing his enthusiasm he appar ently did not do the master builders justice. According to a statement recently attributed to him in the daily press, it was made appear that the master builders intended only to pay the increased rate from to-day, whereas the Government was going to pay the men the accrued increments as from January 1 last. As a matter of fact the master builders affected arrived at a decision before the Minister in the matter of paying the back money, and...

TIME SHEETS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

TIME SHEETS. N.S.W. Master Builders should particularly note an important recent decision of the Chief Indus trial Magistrate with regard to time sheets. The magistrate held that time worked must be entered in the time-book every day, and that it was a breach of the award to allow a week to elapse before mak ing the entries.

The Engineer in Local Government. AUSTRALIA LEADS AGAIN. A Board of Appeal. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

The Engineer in Local Government. AUSTRALIA LEADS AGAIN. A Board of Appeal. We publish in another part of this issue a paper on this— to Municipal Officials — burning topic which was read before a November meeting of the Victorian Section of the Institute of Local Govern ment Engineers of Australasia by one of its mem bers (says 'The Sanitary Record and Municipal Engineering,' England). Our reasons for doing' so are because the author has more vividly and tersely marshalled the reasons for protection of tenure for Municipal Engineers and other officials of Local Authorities than has been done by any officer in the .Mother Country. Me submits the question which is so commonly put, not only by 'the man in the street,' but also, as we have heard it stated, in much higher quarters: 'Why should any one body of officials be protected from dismissal or reduction if his employer is desir ous of so treating him, for in the commercial world an employee has to take the risk of such treatment w...

MASTER BUILDERS DINE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

. ? . ? ? : — : — ? ? MASTER BUILDERS DINE. Perhaps the board groaned under the good things supplied at the Master Builders' dinner. If it did it was the only thing that groaned in that ensemble of joy and good fellowship. The speeches im pressed us most of all. Most of them were crisp, informative, pertinent, and, at times, a little philosophic. ? ' This, for instance, from the President: 'Nothing hampers business so much as unsettled conditions in a trade.' The Minister for Works, who is busy these days endeavoring to anticipate the next outbreak of trouble in State enterprises, either in the form of strikes or Auditor-General's criticisms, was not pres ent. Me evidently preferred to read it in the paper next morning. Anyhow, vnembers of a profession guilty of 'collusion' are scarcely the company for a virtuous Cabinet Minister, who was always taught to avoid contractors and be careful of his aitches and his finances. E. H. Buchanan, an Ex-President of the Master Builders' Associa...

THE APPRENTICESHIP ABSURDITY. A Review and a Suggestion. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 25 May 1914

THE APPRENTICESHIP ABSURDITY. A Review and a Suggestion. N.S.W. Master Builders, at their last general meeting, waxed Warmly on the absurdity and, quot ing Mr. Wm. Stuart, ''the evil,' of the present con ditions frustrating apprenticeship. There was a note of genuine regret and even despair i it. the speeches of tho.se men whose bitter experiences of recent times have made them, more or less, philosophic. It was a pity their audience did not. comprise members of both Parliamentary parties, they being chiefly responsible for the sys tem which is, as Mr. J. M. Pringle put it,' making common hewers of wood and drawers of water of virile Australian manhood.' Mr. Wm. Stuart declared, with evident regret, that the opinions of master builders were classed with prejudice by certain politicians, and others. There is no denying that. Even one in the respon sible position of the Premier has associated the un selfish and broad-minded views frequently expressed by these men, who can best appreci...

TOWN-PLANNING LUNCHEON. Welcome and Au Revoir. The Town Planning Association of N.S.W. gave a luncheon — its first — at Farmer's, on Friday. It was to say au revoir to Captain George A. Taylor (Hon. Secretary) and Major F. Ernest Stowe (Hon. Treasurer), who are shortly leaving for America, and to welcome YValter Burley Griffin (Director of Federal Design and Construction) and Charles C. Reade (Secretary of the British Town-planning tour). The popularity of the occasion was evidenced by the large attendance, a notable feature being the number of ladies present. The healths of the guests were toasted in warmly appreciative speeches, and a spirit of bon camaraderie prevailed.
