The Daily News. SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 20 January 1883

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 1883. The correspondence between His Ex- cellency the Governor, and Mr. Maitland Brown has been the subiect of much comment of late, aud we have hitherto refrained from referring to it, in order that we   might fairly weigh the circumstances aud review the whole question when we were in possession of all the facts. On a former occasion we referred to what appeared to us a deliberate attempt to insult His Excellency, by purposely omitting the toast of his health at the Geraldton dinner given in honor of Mr. Barlee. We have read the explanations ; given by Mr. Majir Logue and Mr. Brown, the former   taking the opportunity to further disparage and show his disrespect for Her Majesty's Representative, by writing of him in a very coarse and offensive manner, and the latter in begging the question by saying that as Chairman he was in no way responsible, being a mere machine in the hands of the Com- mittee. Mr. Brown, and his ally, the West A...

The Daily News. MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 22 January 1883

MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1883. That truth, is sometimes much stranger than- fiction is proved by the sensa tional details of the late Criminal Sessions. In the first case a man, driven almost to madness by his wife s cottd«o-t, in a moment of frenzy cuts her about the face with a knife, — but his anger having passed away he looks forward iwith such horror to having to complete his well-merited seven years' imprisonment, that he deliberately strangles himself in his cell the morn ing after he received his sentence, having previously recorded in two words the cause of his life's failure, by writing on the wall the words, ' My wife.' The next case is a still more terri ble one, accompanied by some of the most extraordinary circumstances pos sible of conception. Two Chinese la borers have a mutual dislike for one another, and to put an effectual stop to such an unpleasant state of things, the one cooly chops the other up with a tomahawk. This horrible crime was committed in the middle of a d...

THE CASE OF CHARLES COLE. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 22 January 1883

THE CASE OF CHARLES COLE. See,— The time has come round for a calm reflection upon the merits of the case of the unhappy man Charles Cole, sentenced to be executed for the murder of Christina Burkenshaw. The very full report publish ed by you of the evidence taken at the trial relieves me of the necessity of making any review of it j but to my mind the Crown has failed to establish the fact beyond all doubt that- Cole is guilty. The case certain ly is a strong one — that is, the circumstances point, to t- degree, to his guilt, but the link is wanting to fix the fact that 7ie, and no other, committed the deed. The matter would assume a very different complexion had Cole been found alone with the body of the dead woman. I have no wish to .cast any reflection upon the other man who was present, and who, until the inquest was concluded, actually remained in custody. Take , away O'Mahoney/s , evidence^ ; which sets out with the statement that the dawn ._ ? ._j^ ... ? .._.;- ? \~ _*--, .....

DEPARTURE OF THE RIGHT HON. THE LORD GIFFORD, V. C. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 22 January 1883

DEPARTURE OF THE RIGHT HON. TOE LORD GIFFORD, V.O. . At three o'clock on Saturday afternoon the Mayor and City Council, together with the principal inhabitants of Perth, assembled in the Town Hall to present the retiriner Colonial Secretary with a complimentary address previous to his departure from this colony. On the platform, which was gaily decorated with flags, flowers, and ferns, stood a long table, on which was placed a quantity of fruit and a number of glasses strongly suggestive of that seasonable drink, iced champagne. On the right of the table were seated several Heads of Departments, Bank Managers, and prominent citizens; we noticed that the Chairman of the Fremantle Municipal Council (Mr. B. C. Wood) was also present : while on the left-hand side the whole of the City Council, with the ex ception of the Mayor, were accommodated with seats, and about a hundred citizens occupied chairs in the Hall below. Shortly after 3 o'clock the Lord and Lady Gifford entered the Hall, ...

The Daily News. TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1883. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 23 January 1883

TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1883. The rapid progress achieved and the material success obtained by the other Australian Colonies has for a long time past excited the envy — but, we are glad to say, has at last roused the emulation — of Western Australians. Many persons have attributed the ?brilliant career of the— as they call them — ''.more favored' pro-consulates either to the discovery of gold within their borders, or to the existence of land peculiarly well adapted to pas toral and agricultural pursuits. But this is all nonsense. True it is that V until lately we wero ignorant of our 4. illimitable' natural resources; but whose fault is that ? Again, we have latelv had it practically demonstrated beyond all possibility of even the wildest scepticism that gold — consist- ing of both rich alluvial deposits and payable auriferous reefs — exist in our colony, both in the far Nor' -West district and also within thirty miles o£ our chief Port — and also that we possess a tract of magnificent...

TO THE PUBLIC. [Newspaper Article] — The Daily News — 23 January 1883

TO THE PUBLIC. AS several persons have made sevoral anxious inquiries respecting the strange proceedings tnken by the Trustee in the mutter of my insolvency, I will state a few facts, in order that the public may see how I have been treated. Some time ago I instructed a lawyer to lay my case before the Hon. the Attorney General, and afterwatds I had an inter view with that gentleman, who said that he waa certain I had done everything that I could, and had acted as an honest man. To use his own words, he said, ' Tho 'Trustee haa made a cat's-paw of you, 'and it ia your own fault to allow him to ' do so.' I then iustructed the lawyer I had em ployed to procure my discharge for me, and he said ho would do so, but after having received £12 8a. 3d. from my family he put me down just as he picked me up, without my discharge. I then wrote to the Court, and received the fol lowing answer. ' Sir, — In answer to your 'letter of tho 15th inst. I am directed by ' His Honor tho Chief Justice to ...
