Here and There. NOTES ON CURRENT TOPICS. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 23 January 1915

Here and There. NOTES ON CURRENT TOPICS. The State Governor Sir Arthur Stanley, appears to have thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Wood's Point gold fields. He declared it was 'one-of the happiest days he had spent in Victoria." He did not forget to tell the kindly hospitable and stranger-loving people in the mountains that, "when he arrived at the summit of Mount Matlock, he had been taken into a settler's little house and treated like a human being. FHe did not like the bowing and scraping that was in separable from the more formal duties of his official position, and was glad that at Wood's Point they had to some extent cast off ceremony and shown him what they really were in their own homes." This is only what might have been expected in a gold mining community, which has al ways been foremost in democratic movements, and is in marked con trast to those inice people with nasty ideas to be found nearer the City. The Governor also showed that the true aristocrat is an example of good...

Providinrg Employment The Lord Mayor's Scheme. The Oakleigh Borough Counci.l and the Mulgrave Shire Council last week considered the question: of providing for the undertaking of permanent works in order to give employment under the Lord Mayor's scheme. The war, even more than the drought, has been the means of creating an army of unemployed, with theI acute dis tress resulting therefrom. The Borough Council, at its meeting in December, referred the matter to the Public Works Committee for report, and that body recommended a number of works (largely as phalting), but, as the Chairman (Cr Knight) said at the meeting held last week, the list was made without any available means of ascertaining the cost, and the council on the motion of Crs West ley and Hunt decided to consider the works for inclusion in any list which may be adopted under the Lord Mayor's scheme for the re lief of the unemployed, in the event of the council deciding to borrow any money for the scheme, with power to ad...
