INSECT POWDER PLANT. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 3 July 1896

INSECT POWDER PLANT. Mr. M. Holtze, Curator of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, (says the Observer,) exhibited at the last week's meeting of the Central Agricultural Bureau, a very fair sample of insect powder which he had produced him self. He cultivated an area of 45 ft. by 6 ft., and harvested half of the flowers for powder, and left half for seed. From 4£ lb. of green stuff he obtained 1 lb. of the dry article. To strip the above took a man forty minutes, and the powder is worth Is. 3d. per lb. By working on these figures Mr. Holtze finds that an acre would yield 895 lb. valued at £22, and that the cost of stripping at 6s. per day would mean 6d. per lb., leaving 9d. per lb. for other expenses and profit.

The second reading of the Renmark Irriga tion Trusts Amend ment Bill, in the House of Assembly on Thurs day, the 2nd instant, was an oppor tunity for members to discuss the pre sent position and future prospects of Renmark. Mr. Copley, leader of the opposition, while saying a good word for Messrs. Chaffey Bros., saw no reason to oppose the Bill, but be had no confidence in the security, though the State Bank could not refuse the loan, which he thought would ultimate have to be repaid by the Government.
