HOME NOTES. ? {By "Mona") A few hints on soup making may be of value this month with the rigors of winter now upon us. Thick soups are of greater food value than the thin soups which are made chiefly of meat stocks or beef essence. BARLEY BROTH.-Cover two shanks with cold water, allow them to come to boiling1 point, then place on a cooler part of the stove and .simmer until the meat is tender; drain into a clean vessel or saucepan and replace on the stove; add 1 teaspoon of washed barley, 1 teaspoon of cnopped onion and a small bunch of parsley chopped finely ; simmer until the barley is tender. A couple of slices of lemon added a short time before serving- adds to the flavor. POTATO SOUP.-3 medium-sized potatoes, 1 quart of milk, 3 slices of onion, li teaspoons salt, a dash of pepper, 1 teaspoon celery salt, 2 tea spoons chopped parsley. "PRIDE OF CANBERRA" JUVENILE COURT A.O.F. Over 100 sat down for lunch. A coid day did not prevent a good muster of parents and children at the annual sports and picnic of the above Court, held at Acton Sports Ground last month. The sum of £3 was offered in prizes, as well as Juvenile Forester emblems, for the successful competitors in races, tug-o'-war, skipping, jumping, etc. The day was topped off with cakes, melons and bananas, and the children departed homewards happy and contented. A most enjoyable tea on May 14 cele brated the opening of the "Pride of Canberra." Prom an initial member ship of 30 the Court now numbers 140. The first annual fancy dress ball will be held on June 10 at the Causeway Hall, in aid of the Juvenile Court. Good prizes, good music, and good re freshments to be provided. One and all invited to come along, and spend a happy evening. A man doesn't know what happiness is until he is married-and then it is too late.

The old historic church of St. John the Baptist, Canberra, was. the scene of a very pretty wedding when Camelia Mignon, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Jowett, was married to Frank Joseph, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Henley-Smith, of Blackalls, Lake Mac quarie, N.S.W. " The Rev. Canon Ward performed the ceremony, in the presence of a large congregation. The bride was given away by her father, and looked charm ing in an early Victorian frock of ivory baroness satin, with opalescent trim mings, carrying a bouquet of white sweet peas, pink carnations, and lilies of the valley. The bridesmaid, Miss Emilie Walker, a cousin of the bride, wore a pretty frock of blue shot taffeta and silver lace, carrying a bouquet of pansies. :; HONOURS TO CANBERRA ::_ MR. J. T. H. GOODWIN, M.B.E. John Thomas Hill Goodwin was born at Yelta, Murray River, in 1865. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Melbourne, and served under articles as pupil surveyor and draughtsman in the Lands and Sur veys Branch, Melbourne, in 1875-1890. In private practice-1891-1896, he joined the Western Australian Govern ment Service in 1896, resuming private practice in Victoria in 1899 until 1908, when he was appointed staff surveyor in Victoria to the Department of Lands, later joining the Commonwealth Ser vice as Land and Property officer. In 1914 Mr. Goodwin succeeded Mr. C. R. Scrivener in charge of the Common wealth Lands and Surveyors' Branch. On the retirement of Colonel Miller, he was appointed officer-in-charge of the Federal Capital Territory, which post Mr. Goodwin held until the ap pointment of the Commission.
