THEY SAY: [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 10 February 1906

THEY SAY: That the vote recorded to-day should be a record one; and That tlio ratepayers should all be in favor of tho platform sub mitted by Kodd and Chcgwidden. That on Wednesday evening Mr. Chapman made a good speech under didicult circumstances; and That his chief trouble was not what to say, but what not to say; and That ho told his audience plainly enough that tho Deakin party at the next election was going for an Australian policy— Protection. That the man who opposed Mr. Chapman for Eden-Monaro would have a hopeless iob on' hand. That with unlocked land and a high protective tariff the genuine unemployed problem would quickly disappear. That 'Profit' Dowie's lieutonan now admits that the former is a failure — some people would use a harsher term than 'failure.' That tho Legislature of Wiscon sin (U.S.A.) has passed a law re quiring all stallions used for breeding purposes to be registered and licensed. That Mr. B. T. The 'Continental' is new to Bega and the Metliodist Church has instituted a departure in public entertainments which is sure to ? become popular. The whole arrangements were carried out under the auspices of the Ladies' Church Aid, and that or ganisation and the incumbent (Rev. E. W. Briscombe) are to be congratulated on the splendid suc cess which attended their efforts. The parsonage ground was illu minated with Chinese lanterns hung among the trees, and acety lene gas, which was generously in stalled by Mr. F. G. Heady, to whom the management is greatly indebted for the great service he rendered in this connection. A splendid musical programme was rendered, every item being very acceptable. An Australian Party. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 10 February 1906

An Australian Party. '!O.v Monday week last Mr. Deukin hud de-dared for a policy wliieli would give employment mid unlock the lands of the country, and, whatever name they might give that policy, he called it l'ro tuction.' — Mr. Uhapiuan, 3I.1I.1J., at tlie Lyceum Hall, on Wednesday night. ? Mr. Austin Chapman,' Postmaster Gcucral, has delivered the impor tant speech- referred ? to in the Budget of 13th January, and, as then foreshadowed, he made no secret that so far as the Deakin Party was concerned the next appeal to the country would be on the clear cut issue of Protection. Of course this is what has all along been expected from a party which ? was returned in the first instance pledged to a policy which essen tially meant providing employ ment for our own people as against the foreigner, and building up a nation of primary producers and skilled artisans with a market and work .at tyeir very door. This party for the future will probably be known by 'the name of the Aus tralian ...
