On Tuesday right a man named James Stewart, who is a well-known coatractor and farmer at Waranga, about seven miles from P.ushworth; informed the local polie that during the night of the 28th m"eL., he and Henry Hopkins,a shepheid, retired to the hut of the informant, and after partaking freely of the contents of a bottle of gin, lay down to rest, both in the same bed. At about 2 o'clock in the morning Hopikins, so Stewart alleges, made an assault upon hirit where upon he (Stewart) took off his strap and beat the offender soundly for about an loar, and their put him outside the hat. At about 9 a.m. some neighbours called and found Hopkins in a very low state, and soon after he expired.- The hut bore signs of a severe struggle having taken place, and pools of blood" lay iii its interior.. Constable Greenw:iy arrested Stewart immediatily after his' confession, and proceeded to.the scene of the tragedy, brinigmg the'body of the deceased to the police camp. here early ...

PUBMBSleD EVERY FRIDAY MORNING. "Let all the ends thou aims'st at be th Country's, Thy God's, .aid Truth's."' F FRIDAY,' Oth JULY, 1885. .TsE.one thing necessary for the such: cessful inception of the Euroa Agricul-: tural. and Pastoral Society, was a unanimous and- representative vote on the question of whether a show sliould be undertaken this year, and the meet .ing on Tuesday last placed the. matter at once beyondthe reach of'doubt or cavil.- Every portion of the shire was representel, chiefly by the men who are. primarily interested in the movement, viz., the farmers and graziers, and we doubt if the records of Eurna can pro duce a parallel case where a large body of men gave an entirely unanimous vote on so important a subject. Those present were not only unanimous but enthusiastic, and immediately gave practical effect to their feelings by de claring that a show should be held; and the businesslike manner -in which the work was commenced gives earnest of a brilliant consummat...
