Attempt to Fire tTHE Victoria. Theatre.—During the last month two se parate attempts have been made to set foe to the Victoria Theatre, in Pitt-Street. The second occurrence took place on last Saturday afternoon, and was discovered by a young lad engaged as a scene painter. In descending the ladder from the work shop to place some brushes in soak he heard a crackling noise as of wood burning and looking under some stairs from which the noise came he saw a quantity of pine burning, which had been cut in small pieces. The alarm was at once given, and fortunately the fire was subdued before spreading any further. Had the fire not been discovered in time a terrible confla gration would have resulted. The fact that two attempts should have been made within so short a time to burn down that place of amusement is very strange, and the difficulty of finding the guilty party has. been entrusted to the detective police. If you wish success in life, make perse verance your bosom friend, experi...

SHOCKING CRUELTY TO A BOY. (Abridged from the Maitland Mercury of the 3 inst.) [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 10 November 1866

SHOCKING CRUELTY TO. A BOY. I Abridged from the Mditldnd Mercury of the 3 inst,.) At the East Maitland Police Court, Charles Whittaker and Rebecca. Whittaker' appeared before the Bench. (Messrs. Day andThomson),charged on the information of senior-constable- Cochrane with assaulting (ill-treating) Augustus Whittaker;. Mr; O'Meagher appeared for the prosecutor, and Mr. Thompson for the defendants*—De fendant pleaded not guilty. Mr. O'Meagher, in opening the case, said- the circum stances of it were unequalled in cruelty, and barbarity; it ■was one of those which, for the credit of human nature, it was to be hoped was of rare occurrence. The gravauian of the charge was that the boy had been deprived of his liberty, fastened up in a stable, covered only by a few filthy rags, and in a state most revolting, as the constable would describe; indeed, it was evident that a cow had shared the stable with the boy. He quoted the law as it affected cases of assault under which the proceedings we...
