English Jottings. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 18 July 1879

English Jottings. The English Wesleyan Thanksgiving Fund has reached the magnificent sum of £153,000. There is a very wide spread desire for emigra tion to the colonies. As manv as 1.000 letter* nave ueeu received in one aay at cue office of the Agent-General for New Z tdand ; but, just now as the tide is flowing, they have stopped free passages and amass it. Emigration seems to be the way, if not the only tue way of re lieving the tension m this country. In England firms are going a begging, everything is much depressed ; there is tfcu-h suffering in the couctry. We are only juBt begining (Jane) to taste fine weather and even now fear it may not last very losg. On the 23 'h May an important ministerial meeting was held in the large room at Centenary Hall, in which all the free churches were repre sented. HolUmatfs Ointment and Fills. — Sure Belief— The Weak and enervated suffer severely from nervous affections when Btorms or electric disturbances agitate the atmosphere. The Pills, taken occasionly in the doses prescribed by the instructions, keep ihedkeelion iu order, excite a free flow of healthy bile, and regenerate the impoverished blood with richer materials resulting from thoroughly assilimated food — wanting width the strongest must invenriably soon eink into feebleness, and the delicate find it difficult to maintain existence. CHAPTER XXVUL A DIBCLO8TOB. And now he was all eagerness to brave the first dragon in his way — the certain opposition of this proud old lady at Castle Dare. No doubt she would stand aghast at the mere mention or snea a tnmgj perhaps in her sadden indignation she might otter sharp words that wonld rankle afterwards in the memory. In any ease he knew the struggle would be long, and bitter, and harassing ; and he had not the skill of speech to persuasively bend a woman's wilL There was another nay — impossible, alas !— lie had thongbt of. Our Educational System. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 25 July 1879

Our Educational System. For many years there was in thig colony a wide-spread agitation for an improved system of State education and ia many respects we ;were certainly very &r behind our neighbors in these matters, but this can no longer be said of ok now at any rate so far as the Act itself goes, though ia many points of regulation and administration vre could with advantage copy them. We often hear persons recommend that Acts of Parliament should be so framed as to meet the requirements not only of the present but also of years to come and this |s a very desirable thing so long as they are administered gradually1 as circumstances demand, but when a measure has been long delayed in its passage as law there too often follows upon prolonged inactivity an excessive zeal not tempered by discretion nor based upon fact so much' as upon theory. Now it appears to us that this has been the case upon the education question and we fully believe that as at present administered tne sy...
