cuitimruxDEXCE. " A BOAT ! A BOAT ! " TO THE Kl IIT0I1 Ol' THE IIVTU-KTCN. Sin,-I eec by advertisement that the railway will open to thc (>nnct on 1st March. Tn conversation yesterday with Mr. Shaw, Messrs. Cobb and Co.'s agent, he informed mc that between Lilyvale and thc Comet thc Nogoa hos to lie crossed twice, and that very little rain caused thc river to bc flooded. Mr. Ballard is, according to Mr. Shaw's state- ment, going tn put a punt at one crossing of the Nogoa, but nothing at the other ; and Mr. Shaw says that when it is necessary to usc thc punt at one place the other crossing will bc flooded, and there the mails will have to remain until thc river goes down. ! A JUÜICPAL SCANDAL. '. Tm; Wellington (KZ.) correspondent to thc Melbourne A ryun gives thc following account of some strange proceedings in tho Supreme Court of New Zealand : What may fairly bc described as a serious judicial scandal is now causing a good deal of talk. It is the committal to gaol for a mouth of Mr. George Eliot Barton, thc well-known banister, and formerly member for North Melbourne in your Parliament. Thc offence for which this punishment was inflicted was that very vague one known as contempt nA court, and the judicial functionaries who bound to vindicate their authority by acting as prosecutors, J udges and jury allin one, were Chief Justice Prendergast and Judge Rich- mond, both of whom when practising in Otago were Mr. Bartou's juniors there. For a long time Mr. Barton has not got on well with these Judges, and scenes have been fre- quent in court. He is ot a very excitable temperament, and their Honors have on every possible occasion, but in thc most quiet ...

THE FINANCIAL STRUGGLE IN AMERICA. (Pall Mail Budget, January 4.) [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 1 March 1878

TIIE£WANCIAL STRUGGLE IN AMEIIICA. ( PattâMl Jltultfe!, January 4. ) A SHAitp and.as yet indecisive conflict is go- ing on in the United States over thc proposal to establish thc silver dollar as a legal tender for all kinds of payments and to any amount. The American people have been surprised at the strength of tho feeling developed in thc West and South in favour of a "debtors' money." Thc resolute assurances of thc Pre- sident, and tho vigorous argument of Secretary Sherman, restored confidence among capitalists for a short time ; but thc Constitu- tion gives the Executive no power to resist a two-thirds vote of Congress, and grave fears lugan to bc entertained, soon after thc open- ing of the session, that a two-thirds vote in the Senate as well as thc House of Represen- tatives was within the reach of thc Silver Party.
