We understand that a compact was re cently entered into between New South 'Wales and Victoria for tho prospecting 6f tiie border line from Capo Howo to the Australian Alps for gold and other ininorala. The Victorian party, headed by Mr. S. Hunter, an expert from tbo Mines . Deportment, and piloted by, Mr. John Pleydell, who is au experienced bushman, have commenced operations, and are now actively engaged prospect ing on their side of the border. Mr. Hunter was in town Ia3fr woolr, expoot ing to meet an expert from the New South Wales Mines Department, but up to the present they do not appear to have. made any further move in the matter. Mr. Copeland, we believe, is tho prime, mover in tho affair. New South Wales was tho first to suggest tho compact, and it is to be devoutly hoped that the Min ister for Minos will see that it is carried out, and got his party equipped with as littlo delay as possible. ? Delegate River. [Newspaper Article] — Delegate Argus and Border Post — 21 May 1896

EDeicg&ttc IIESvcf (Froii our Correspondent.) Winter is creeping sensibly upon us, and with it cornea tho dloom of a groat many of our stock. Feed is &- Bcarce commodity, and it was never more badly wanted thau this year. When one looks upon the totering frames of our stock the conviction is enforced upon us that the end of most of them is close at hand. Yet nothing is more noticeable here- than the inadequatoness of shelter accommo dation. They are exposed to the severi ties of an inclement winter with almost no shelter provision and- very little to eat'. Can we wonder at tho- great' mor- tality that occurs among sfosk every year when wo romember that they are just as susceptible to- ostreines of heat and cold as a human being. Mr. Phillips has been successful in his undertaking of removing tho Haydon's Bog school to Delegate River. Many prophocied catastrophe for Mr. Phillips in hie attempt to remove it en masse, but ' fortune favoured the brave,' and the building ...
