Many clever schemes have been evolved recently in various sections of the United -States with a view to checking the enormous toll of lives which are daily sacrificed to the modern Juggernaut, the -fast-travelling automobile, which the average well-to-do American indulges in. The extensive cult of motoring in America has tremendously increased the death roll, and Safety First Associations have vainly laboured unremittingly to persuade the motorists to exercise greater caution ■while peregrinating along the highways of the country. It remained for New York City's 14,000 policemen to become automobile experts one fine day towards the close of November. Acting on orders received from Cameron Wright, who had planned a three weeks' campaign to reduce the number of automobile accidents, the police stopped thousands of motor cars and examined them minutely for mechanical defects.
