CURRENT AFFAIRS [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 19 January 1899

CURRENT AFFAIRS January 15 there was opened at Gozoacan , a suburb of the Gity of Mexico , an agricultural exposition at which a number of Americans have exhibits of cattle , machinery and agricultural implements . i Statistics just compiled by the immigration officials show that the total number of passengers inspected on steamers arriving at Boston , Mass ., for the last year was 53 , 859 , which includes those from Canadian and European countries . During the last six months of the year there was an increase of about 3 , 000 over the first six months . e Many Nebraska families who have sons and fathers among the Nebraska troops that are expected soon to land at San Francisco on their way from Manila are much • excited over the fact that Congressman . Stark has sent word to Lincoln that the report is true that the home coming troops will themselves have to see that they . s hav f e suitable clothing to replace the light garments they have worn in tropical Manila . • January 15 wor...

Looking- to ' iooo [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 19 January 1899

Looking- to iooo I T was expected that W . J . Bryan would outline the party policy for 1900 at the Jackson Day banquet held at Chicago December Tth . An important conference of the leaders o £ the democratic , silver-republican and populist parties was held prior to this event , so that his utterances on that day may be considered as authoritative . They bear no uncertain sound as regard s the money question or the question of imperialism . He said : A word in regard to imperialism . Those who advocate the annexation of the Philippines call themselves expansionists , but they are really imperialists . The word expansion would describe the acquisition of territory to be populated by homogeneous people and to be carved into States like those now in existence . An empire suggests variety in race and diversity in government The imperialists do not desire to clothe the Filipinos with all the rights and privileges of American citizenship ; they want to exercise sovereignty over an alien ...

Death of Senator Morrill - [Newspaper Article] — National Rural and Family Magazine — 19 January 1899

Death of Senator Morrill - A GOOD example of the possibilities of a loyal American-citi-zen in public service has been given in the lite of Senator Justin Smith Morrill of Vermont , which was brought to a close on the morning of December 28 ., For forty-four years Sena . or Morrill has served his state in the legislative halls of the nation . Since 1867 he has been , as at the time of his death , one of the senators from . Vermont . He has of late been called , the father of the senate and was the oldest in years , being eighty-eight years old his last birthday , as well as having the longest continuous service of any member , of that body . The striking fact in connection with Senator Morrills life , aside from the length of his service , is its practical usefulness to the nation . He was not a man of , pre-eminent abilities , nor , in the ordinary sense , of high education . His early training was in the mercantile business beginning with a small clerkship in his fifteenth year . ...
