Father Weigel Declares U . S . Religion On Wane [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 7 April 1960

Father Weigel Declares U . S . Religion On Wane by Tom Gilmartin Fr . Gustav Weigel , S . J ., sent his lecture , The Brave New World , as a sharp , reviving slap to the face of the deluded , which may include everyone . His theme , the radical , perhaps regrettable , change occurring as the result of rapid technical advance and population increase , was meant to awaken man to the fact that the will or good fortune of the individual are no longer the main factors in determining history . Father Weigel based his supposition on four existent conditions . First , the age of capitalism , of financial , industrial giants who could dictate to society , is giving way to a socialism in which the popular voice is the ultimate dictum . Secondly , the aristocratic , middle , and lower classes are melting into an amorphous proletariat from which the proficient , not the wise , are chosen for government and administration . And the producing man who was master of the machine has been replaced by...

Loyalty Oath Wins Support From 400 In Signature Drive Nearly 400 signatures were collected by the Georgetown Committee for the Loyalty Oath in their drive to organize support for that controversial measure of the National Defense Education Act . Committee Chairman Bob Harley , assisted by John Galloway and Richard Luby , now plans to submit the list to the National Committee for future action . Doug Caddy , a Foreign Service School senior , is the present head of the National Committee . The Georgetown Committee , besides its drive for signatures , has been lobbying with several Senators , hoping to gain their support in rejecting the Kennedy Amendment which would repeal the Loyalty Oath . Harley expressed surprise that so many Democrats had signed the petition along with those who actually had to take the oath to obtain funds as students . Opponents of the Loyalty Oath have been less militant . The Georgetown Young Democrats have established a Loyalty Oath Committee headed by Forei...

Chess Club On Loose [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 7 April 1960

Chess Club On Loose KAUFMANN ( Continued from Page 1 ) Dogmatic theology , the study of Revelation and the teaching of the various religions , was also attacked by Professor Kaufmann . A prime fault of theology , according to him , is the fact that theologians use different principles and standards of judgment . When confronted with data which agree with their own faiths , theologians are seen as being sympathetic and using every rational technique to incorporate this new evidence within the confines of their faith . When , however , a theological problem is encountered that does not fall within the areas of a particular theologian s belief , he often rejects this difficulty or evidence . Professor Kaufmann also deplored the many different interpretations of Scripture and Revelation so prevelant in theological circles today . He said that there are as many different views as creatures . Kaufmann , who centered this aspect of his critique of theology around Protestant scholars , cite...
