The fllusieal Clubs . It may appear to some of our readers that undue prominence is given the College Musical Clubs in the columns of the Gejtvshurghn . However this opinion can arise only from a poor appreciation of the value of the clubs and their real relation to the institution . After several weeks of faithful and painstaking practice the clubs have arrived at a stage of efficiency that argues well for the season of 98 and 99 . This is all the more gratifying inasmuch as it was generally conceded to be very difficult , if not impossible , to organize musical clubs which would compare at all favorably with those of last year which were considered by many to be the best in the history of our College Musical Organizations . The members of these clubs are to be commended for the zeal which they show in their work . They go at it in proper spirit and are already beginning to perform as those more experienced in this work , although both clubs are practically new , comparatively few ...

Pointed Items . Chauncy Depew says : In my observation , extending over the work of 6 o _, ooo men employed by our company , I find the young man who entered business without going through a course of training is enormously hampered in his progress of life . There are many young men looking for soft snaps . They do not realize that the educated man has spent days and years of hard work acquiring his training , and therefore they think a few lessons will be its equivalent . A young man recently said : Don t you think I will get as much from a two-years correspondence course in electricity as I would at a technical school in four years ? This is ridiculously absurd , and reveals the total educational depravity of many well-meaning young men . Schools and teachers advertising short and easy courses of instruction can be found all over the country . The Aurora ( 111 . ) Daily _Mtvs says : The man who has been teaching book-keeping and penmanship in ten easy lessons has departed for gree...

FOR the benefit of our new men , and as a leminder for the older ones , we call attention to the fact that the college and society libraries together contains about 23 , 856 volumes of books which cover a large variety of subjects , and especially such subjects as meet the wants and needs of our students . It may seem supeifluous for us to mention the above fact here , but a somewhat continued observation has led us to estimate that not more than twenty five per cent , of the men _aic making anything like a proper use of the advantages the libiaries _affoid . This condition is so far from being light that it is entirely wiong . These are days of broad reading and close research . Without books this is of course impossible . But with thousands of books only a few yards away , and any possible leisure time at command , failure to make proper use of the books becomes almost a crime . Let upper classmen be an example in this matter to the younger men . If the example is not forthcoming ...

ATHUETIC NEWS . h A Wkiglk _, oo _. Reporter The game with Gallaudct and the practices of the last week have bi ought about a shape up in the team , which we believe to be for the best , although it was made so short a time before the F . and M . game that the men were hardly accustomed to their positions . Bennett is not yet in condition to get into the game and Captain Young has decided to take his place at end . This is where Young has played before , and there is no doubt that he will be Jworth more to the team at his old place than at half . Rugh has taken the place vacated by Captain Young , and seems to be rapidly learning the position . Krout has taken Rugh b place at quarter , and is doing good work . He has some expei ience , having captained the scrub during the first of the year , and playing quarter on the varsity during the latter half of the Lebanon Valley game . Deveney goes back to sub-tackle , which is clearly his best position . Gilbert is being tried at tackle an...

F . AND M -26 , _GEt I _VMiUKG-O . Gettysburg lost to F . & M last Satin day by the large scoie of 26 to o in the most poorly played game of the season . The day was bad , there being a strong wind , and the F & M grounds are notoriously poor and hard for . strangers to play upon , but this cannot account for the game put up by our team . Dining the fiist half , theii woik , though not as good as usual , was fairly creditable , but in the second half they went to pieces , and F . & M . added 18 to the S points they had already gained . The only good gain made by Gettysburg was a 40-yard run by Dinger on a foul kick , which in defense , the line seemed utterly unable to withstand the superior weight of the Lancaster men . One piece of what was really hick added to the score ; Gettysburg captured the ball on downs on her three-yaid line , and it was sent behind the goal to Dinger for a punt . He sent it on a pretty low drive which would have _foiced...

SOCIETIES . PIIRENA . An interesting program was rendered to an apparently interested audience last Friday night . With but few exceptions , all who had been assigned parts on the program , responded . This has been the case at every meeting held this fall , and is in itself an encouraging sign of improvement . A large number of our younger men performed , and considering their limited experience , they acquitted themselves well . Following is the program as rendered : Orations , Lauffer , Reisch ; Essays , Keller , Stover , Snydcr ; Declamations , Moser , B . Stoner , Weber . The subject of debate was : Resolved , that the policy of Bismarck is more far-reaching in its effects than that of Gladstone . Aff . Roehner , Haer ; Neg . Grove , Carney . Prof . Brede has kindly consented to become an honorary member of Phrena , and has been duly elected . The Society feels highly honored in having Prof . Brede on its roll of honorary members . The following is a complete lrst of all the ne...

V . _] W . C . A . Our College secretary , Mr . Soper , will visit the society during the coming week and in order to convenience him the meeting will not be held until Friday evening , at 7 o clock . The leader for that evening is Mr . W . N . McNair . The society has purchased and has distributed among its members the State Membeiship Ticket , which has been adopted by the Executive Committee of the State Young Men s Christian Association . New hymn books have also been purchased , which we hope , will add much to the interest of the meetings . The Neglected Continent was the subject discussed on last Sabbath morning . The meeting was led by Mr . Keller . Mr . VV . R . Miller spoke on the Race and Language , and Mr . J . C . McCarney spoke on the Religion of the continent The speakers showed , that South America has truly been neglected , but that it is a bioad and promising field for the missionary to work . T 0 _WJ 4 NOTES . The Adams county Court-room was filled to its utmost capacity last Wednesday evening , with people who came to hear Dr . Silas C . Swallow the Prohibitionist Candidate for Governor . His remarks were frequently applauded and great interest was shown in all that he said . Volncy B .
