E 'I . - MCH I HAVB SKETCHED. (Continued from page 1) That evening and the day fol lowing I mado pictures of the great Speaker, and, much to my embarassment, Mr. Ralph insist ed upon showing them to him. Some weeks later Mr. Reed sent word by Ralph that, if I could spare them, he would like to have the original drawings, many of which I sent him. His letter of acknowledgment shows the kind ly sarcasm of this distinguished Btatcsman: "Your pictures of mo aro not wildly flattering but awfully." Ho seemed very friendly. I always attributed to his sense of humor the cutting things he sometimes said. Walking with him one day from the House over to the Sen ate, in the big rotunda under the dome of the Capitol where many people piloted by official guides are usually to be found listening to the strange echoes of the place, a tall, thin woman approached us very rapidly and paused a few feet away from us. Then step ping directlv in front of Mr. Reed, she inquired, "Is this Mr. Thomas B. Reed...

(Continued from page 1) Mr. H&Utead was a man noted for his sarcasm and especially for the peculiar expressions of his face while he was listening to or putting a question. He had a skill ful roundabout way of trying to make his queries as agreeable ns possible. He presented me to Mr. McKinley with altogether to much gusto for the quality of art that I was capable of putting forth. But if I ever listened to a more delightful conversation, ranging over a half or possibly three-quarters of an'hour, where really so little of importance was said, I don't recall it. Of course, Mr. Halstead was framing ques tions that no presidential candi date at so early a date could think of answsring. Yet the masterly way by which his most distinguished friend replied was a lesson never to be forgotten. I studied the alleged resem blance of Major McKinley 's face to the Dictures of Napoleon. It was all there with a slight differ e...

Tho result of this tack was that I continued on down tho street having no further desire to probe the mat ter with the lady as tho cold re ception I got on second meeting was unmistakable. I went to the Senator and told him of the chilly stare I had re ceived, where all was to have been kindness, when he made the startling confession that while lie had promised to make it right at home ho had not figur ed that I was going to start in on him as soon as I did, and that before he had a chance to lay the dust, on reaching home one evening he found in his wife's hand the newspaper containing between my family and that of Mr. Fairbanks, I would point out innumerable traits of character and many marks of distinction in his features.
