In the year 1643 the Long Parlia ment appointed the celebrated convo cation known as the Westminster As sembly, or Assembly ef Divines, for the purpose of settling the doctrine, liturgy, and government of the church of England. It cQnsisted of 121 clergy men and 30 laymen--10 of whom were ler4s and 20 commoners-together ,with four clerical and two lay commis iloners from the Church of Scotland.
