Cz) t5hc is lorau. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY JANUARY 25. 1885 HONESTY THE BEST POLICY. It must be confessed that the diffi culties of doiug a good, square busi ness in a good, thorough, square style are becoming greater and hard or than ever to combat. Honest and honorable competition has given vray largely to a series of petty shifts to gain a mean advantage, and the busi ness man has frequently to encounter bold and unscrupulous lying among his rivals. If young in business and need', he must solicit favors from men lie despises, and have transac tions with others -whom otherwise ho would scorn to associate with; that it is a maCtcr of difficulty to be his plain, honest self; but it seems as if he must go on in the Exchange or in to the business world with a set of actions, pretenses, and even express ions that does not belong to him but is assumed for that particular pur pose, and all too often the assump tion gradually absorbs other and better qxtalities of mind and heart und becom...

Cz) Wt gaity gstoHau. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY JANUARY 27, 16S5 AUTOMATIC ARCTIC EXPLORA TION. Pkobablt the most wonderful thing in the whole sad history of Arctic exploration is the recent dis covery of an ice floe in the waters of Davis' strait west of Greenland which had drifted from a point in the Arctic ocean northeast of the Lena delta where the crew of the Jcanelte divided into three parties and look to the open waters to the southernmost point of Greenland, and north again to Baffiu's bay. Up on this floe were a corpse, and many indubitable relics of the expedition, including an article of wearing appar el marked with the name of Seaman Noros, who. it will be remembered, in company with seaman Nindermann went a few miles ahead of poor De Long, and lived to write the most ex traordinary experience ever penned by a human hand. Had these two simple seamen been able to tell, in the Siberian tongue, that their com rades were only eleven miles back' the whole Do Long party would h...

fz) Slic gattjj gtfforan. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY JANUARY 28. 1685 METROPOLITAN ENTERPRISE. Sax Francisco, in common -with smaller cities, complains of hard times. How to mitigate or overcome the existing dullness is the problem given n joint committee in that city composed from various business as sociations. The report is interesting. It suggests that a European steam ship line for freight and immigrant traffic be established. Somo of the reasons advanced are most cogent. Following is a portion of the report; it applies in a slight degree to Asteria: "To secure for the future the posi tion which San Francisco has occu pied in the past, and to which her geographical position clearly entitles her, some prompt and decisive action on the part of her citizens is neces sary. In our judgment, cheap, rapid and reliable water communication will do more to restore prosperity to this city than anything else, and to the cousideration of this matter we invite your attention.
