There are but few people, who, if they are going to buy a cow, will not ask a friend to go along with them and help pick her out, or, not having a friend who has confidence in his own judgment, will say to the seller, "Now I am not a judge of cows, and shall have to depend oa your honor in tho matter." Perhaps, as a rule, the latter is the safer way, bat it is not always pleasant to acknowl edge one's ignorance in regard to so simple a matter, aud not always to one's advantage to be compelled to trust to the honor of others in matters i...

I heard a young English lady say the other day to her companion in a tramway, that on leaving home her friends bad charged her above ah to see U.i things in Paris — the Boi3 de Boulogne and the Morgue. In my opinion they are the last places one should visit, for although the . Bois de Boulogne is beautiful in graceful verdure and fairylike in its artistic airange ment, which consists la thwarting nature as little as possible, with Hyde J Park be fore one's eyes, it is easy to imagine the combination of trees, lakes and waterfalls ; whereas, artistic monuments are books wherein past ages have inscribed their thoughts, their feelings acd aspirations, and possess a characteristic of the:r own. SCIENTIFIC SCRAPS . ' If. JBoiteau reports to the French Academy that the application of bisulphide of | carbon to grape-vines infested with phylloxera has proved entirely successful. The plants are affirmed not to be injured by the application. He declares that dis eased vines which were J treated with this compound two or three years ago bear even better now than before they were attacked. Lontin has been exhibiting in the build ing of the Industrial Exhibition 'in the Champs Elysees, Paris, a circular electric light, formed by four voltaic arches.' J He uses four carbons placed radially, the two which are in the same diameter being con nected with the same pole, so that an arch extends from each of the carbons of its neighbors. These four 7 arches unite to form a complete circle and produce a light of extraordinary brilliancy. In recent _ papers before the French Academy MM.
