We remind our readers that to-day the .legal voters of the State for the first time make their judicial officers. There are good men in the field for each office to be filled. We have no doubt that the result will convince those who have been scep tical that the people are capable of making proper selections. MR. ETUERIDGE, OF TENNESSEE. A correspondent of the Banner highly eulogises the speech of Mr. E-rnEMDOF, of this Stale, against the Nebraska bill Mr. Ethebwge i, indeed, a frank and pleasant gentleman; so much so that, while we cannot feel much care for the political reputations of our whig opponents, we are really sorry that he has so palpably "pat his foot in it." We did not believe it possible, from our knowledge of the man, that the New York Tribune would ever be able to count him among "our force...

There is an article iD the Banner of yesterday morning which is worthy of the serious considera tion of southern men. It takes n step towards acquiescence in the demands of free-soilism, -which, if generally sanctioned liere, would lead to a speedy yielding of every thing. The idea attempted to be enforced is, that we had peace before the introduc tion of the Nebraska bill; that had the bill been rejected the abolitionists would have been quiet; and that its passage will increase heir ability to do m:schie We cannot regard this reasoning as sound. We had no peace with the abolitionists before the introduction of the bill, and no concession to their demands short of the abolition of slavery will secure peace. The south has never made a concession which has not encouraged the abolitionists to de mand other...

The mob spirit in this country is gaining an alarming ascendency. Outbreaks which a few years ago -were extremely rare, and attracted at ten- ! tion all over the country, are now of such frequent occurrence as to excite very little remark. The "sovereign people" in a great many localities in this great confederacy have a horror for everything like the slow progress and uncertainty of the law, and are gradually taking the punishment cf cer tain kinds of offence into theifown hands. There c, to them, a peculiar fascination about Lynch law. j It admits of no conflicting testimony, special plead ing, or hung juries, but decides and punishes with unerring certainty and refreshing promptness. The last specimen of the mob spirit was ex hibited at Wheeling the other day. On the last trip of the Pennsylvanian to that town...

By reference to the news in this clay's paper, it will be seen that the Nebraska bill has passed the Senate in the same shape in which it had formerly passed the House, and that itis now the law of the land. We have, by the Washington papers, lull reports i of the action of the House on the passage of the bill in that body. The southern members proved themselves greatly the overmatch of their northern opponents in parliamentary tactics.
