WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR WESTERN KANSAS BY PROPER USE OF THE WATER SUPPLY The Agricultural Authorities 'Believe that from Two to Three Million Acres of Land There Can be Profitably Irrigated by Pumping from the Underflow or by Using , the Storm Waters. By H. B. Walker, State Irrigation Engineer at the Kansas Agriculal College. THE WESTERN half of Kan sas contains 22 to 3 million seres of land where water may be encountered at a depth of sixty feet or less. Practically all this land can be profitably irrigated by pump ing from the undreflow or by the stor age of storm waters. Naturally! this area seems quite small when compared with the total H. B. WALKER. area of the state. Yet, even if only about 5 per cent of the total area of Kansas, it represents a total area as great as Colorado or California irri gated in 1909 and a much greater area than was irrigated the same year in Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Nevada, ,or any other of the seventeen irrigated states in the West.
