When our new western slates had few roads, and people nsed horaes for carrying things instead of wagons, save in certain localities, it Wis customary to get a sack of coin or wheat, throw it across a hor6e and lide to mill, and return with the grist. At one mill a young manusually wen to get his grinding done; and it was no ticed that he always come with his griei in one end and a large clone in the other, to balance. The millers told him to put wheat or corn in both ends, and throw the stone away. He did so once or twice, but soon took to his stone again, saying, "His great, great grand father, great grand father, grand father, father, and older brothers carried a stone in one end, and he did not see any use of starting any new way; as the eld is good enough."
