Under an excuse of having a sick wife in some nearby town Abraham Smith, former proprietor of the above named store left town very quietly about five weeks ago. Lit tle or no attention was paid to his departure as he left his brother, Samuel Smith in charge of the store, but on Monday Samuel put a notice on the door, "Closed on account of sickness," and folded his tent like an Arab, and quietly stole uway. He mailed a letter to the First National Bank the even ing before his departure enclosing the store keys and 3 draft due by his brother for $491, and stated that he had the cash on hand to pay same but that the stock on hand amounted to about one thous and dollars.
