Walker, when, carrying out the instructions of the President, he interfered in Kansas affairs against the South. The guilty prin cipal was permitted to escape, but his agent was held up as deserving the severest condemnation. The one had power and patronage ; the other was an humble in strument ; and as is ever the case, with those who "crook the pregnant hinges of the knee, where thrift may follow fawn ing," laudations were bestowed upon the former, whilst curves were lavished upon the latter. 13ut these are now things of the past.
