TOWN TALK. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 26 September 1874

TOWN TALK. Bv Gnr;.M»Lu». The talk is that ihe Adelaide Government are liberal in proposing to expend £00,U0Uupon the Northern Territory during the next year, in addilion to salaries; but that the amount proposed for postal service, £."»,000, will not be sufficient, as it is not likely that any of the steam boat companies will do it for that amount. Still, the total amount will be good for us, and lucky shall webe to get it, seeing how difficult it is for the Assembly to attend to anything ex- cept "no-confidence motions," which are now brought on so frequently that our weekly telegrams seem to contain a standing line, "Another hostile motion against the Govern- ment." The talk is that the Union corres- pondents, who complain so much about the trouble of coming to attend the Commission, are (pule right to grumble ; but they ought not to talk about lox'tntf their claims rather than attend to support their applications, because by so doing they will lead people to suppose that there i...

Northern Territory Times. PALMERSTON: SATURDAY, SEPT. 26, 1874. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 26 September 1874

Jf0i[t!t(;i[ir S^rrifarg ©ima PALMERSTON: SATURDAY, SEIT. 20,1874. WitiïN the Mining1 Commission met on Tuesday last, Mr. Scott, on talcing the chair, expressed his disapprobation of the comments on the previous week's proceedings which had been made in the Northern Territory Times, and said that if the Press "committed the offence again" it would not be allowed to attend, inasmuch as the Mining Act permitted the Commission to sit with closed doors, and it could do so if it liked. In answer to this, we say at once that it is not the practice for the Press-except, per- haps, in France, where the newspapers are gagged by the Government-to report the proceedings of any tribunal whose doings are not allowed to be commented upon ; and it is not likely that we are going to submit to dicta- tion in a place like this. The public can look back to our issue of last week, and can judge for themselves whether any of the com- ments there published arc in excess of what is fair and reasonable. We...

COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE. SANDY CREEK. (From our own Correspondent.) [Newspaper Article] — Northern Territory Times and Gazette — 3 October 1874

COUNTRY (MRESPoiîDÏÏIiCS. SANDY CREEK. (From our own Correspondent.) Mining matters and business gen- erally have been rather dull here during the last few weeks. Our little community has been, and is still, suffering much from fever and dysentery, so that many strong and able men have been reduced to great weekness ; and but for the exertion of Dr. Houston, there is no saying what mischief disease might not have worked among our numbers. This, and the want of water on the lower claims of the flat, have, of course, affected the gold returns ; still many of the claims yield handsome 'divi- dends ; and there seems to be no lack of employment for those who prefer the certainty of good wages to the chances of a digger's life. We hear that a number of coolies have given the slip to Mr. Newman, and started on the Katherine road, but why, it is hard to find out. I saw two of them brought back by a trooper from Pine Creek, and poor forlorn-looking specimens of humanity they appeared as they...

Minino; Commission. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29. Present-G. B. Scott (President), Mr. Connel-, and Mr. Price. On the application of Mr. Smith, the Commission decided that in the case of Starke, who had deposited £20 as objector in Kudall's case, there should be retuned to him the sum of £15. Commission adjourned. A German, who was asked if lager-beer was intoxicating, replied : " Veil, I trinks from seventy to eighty glasses a day, and I feels all straight in my upper story for any kind of beesiness, but I can't tell vat it vould do mit men vat makes a swill-tub of himself."
