CORRESPONIENCE. (We do not necessariU endorse the opinions of our correspontdedts.) THE RECENT FO)TBALL MATCH. (To the Edtdtr Iftealesvik Guardian.) Sitt,-With your permasion, I shall say a few words anent last week's football match between the Heales ville and Yarra Glen chlths, and the circumstances which led up to the game being arranged. In no way is it my wish to pen these lines in a spirit of prejudice, as theevil wrought is now too late to he remedied, but as the matter has been made one of t~Ultent conversatioh, it would be well Were the true facts connected with it placed before your readers, ,so that they mnay judge for themselves if the local foothallers are not justithid in raising their voice in..protest against the un- I called for treatment which they have latbly been suljected t".hy.,a some. THE BADGER CREEK DANCE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 22 September 1899

THE BADGER CREEK DANCE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUrARDIAN. SIa,-I respectfu'lly be, to offer you a suiggestion, whicft may be of some use to the promotets 6f the next dance at the Badger CGreek schoolrooim. I was induced to buy a ticket for a "so. called" dance, hkeld thee'i last week, under pretext of having an Pnjoyable time: There wer6 to hek 1 couples there, rrnd those who dtd' not care to dance were to have a friendly ~ante of cards. As I da'd not inrtend to danco, I was not surprised to see only five ladies present an'd 20 gents. But \w'hefi I heard that the promoter (a lady, of course) refused; for trnknown reasons, to p-ovide a talbtl' for card playing, I forrded the opinioh that the afihir had been organised foi nioiiey-making pur poses alone, and that the enjoyment of those present was only a secondary consideration. Next ti.,e I think they should have a rehearsal a night before so as the subscribers will not have need to complain like the TOWNITE.

ST. JOHN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 22 September 1899

ST. JOHN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL ENTERTAINMENT. ----e-·- c An entertainment in aid of St. John's Sunday School was held in Daly's lall on Tuesday evening last. The building was uncomfortably i crowdedt a great many who possessed v front seat tickets having to he content t with a rear seat, and thus the house a was in every respect thoroughly influen- a tial and representative of all classes of c the commnunity; The promoters have I every reason to feel thankful to the I public for the spontaneous support ' accorded on behalf of the hnovement, d seeing that a most cheese-paring policy s was adopted in giving publicity to the v entertainment. It has been.our lot in t other towns in which our lines have 1 been cast to often attend such func- i tions, but this is the only one where , patrons of a concert are ofttimes J cotnpelled to follow the itfems off a I inanuscript sheet,-writtcn out by same ardent enthusiast of the concern, who, t no doubt, is imbued by the belief that, v in carrying out ...

SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 22 September 1899

SOUTH AFRICAN AFFAIRS, Day after day thtt ht4spapt'rr! are full of telegrams about the Trans vaal.. It seenms certain that there can not lie any lasting peace between Boers and British until the stronger power shall decide to use its strength to make the weaker obey its will. Pity 'tis so; but so it is. It is a grim irony that makes the peace-loving British thus determine to crush in a despotic Way the propei feelings of the Boers for their own independence. We in Abas. tralia have never had the race question raised ; but differences of race and of religion make a gulf between p'Lople that is very hard to bridge over. The paraiiiliht powber has to choose be tween a sdit of iron despotism and the benevolenc. of the late Mr.: )lad= stodne.
