International Conrgess of Socialists. . STUDENTS AND EX STUDENTS. ' Comrades,— In 18SU was held at .Brussels the first, International Congress of Socialist students, A Socialist Congress was held in September of lS9i'- at Geneva. Since then Socialism has been increasing in force in every part of the world, and among the uni versities it has greatly extended. Advance Australia. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 23 June 1900

Advance Australia. When the mightiest nation earth has teen took up arms against the smallest nation in the world, numbers of Aus tralians offered their services, at so much per day, to assist in the battle. Get your sword and get your gun, For there's fighting to be done, And — it's only ten to one 'Gainst the foe. And we'll make the farmers fly When our burnishedstell draws nigh — They must either run or die When we go. We have chased the kangaroo On the wide and far Karoo ; And we'll chase the Dutchmen too To his lair. For we've men enough to eat him, And if ten to one can't beat him, Then we'll send still more to meet him— Ain't that fair ? When the stranger's land is gory With the bjood of old men hoary, And their youths are sent to glory B y our hands ; Then we'll have a royal time, For 'tis ancient truth sublime, Might is Right in every clime, In all lands. What to us their women weeping 1 While our armies, proudly sweeping, With grim death are ruthless reaping Son -.nd sire ...

The Spectre. I Bending o'er the baby, leering down at the bride. Claiming a (eat in every home and (nocking at manhood's pride ; No man tivea him greeting — shadowy, fierce, and gaunt — But by our aide, whether we bide, glares the spectre, Want. I Hear him whisper the merchant, see I him clutch at the clerk, And lool. with the eyes of suicide at the man that's out of work. I Oh, lads that go tc the prisons, well ! they know his frown ; And to the banned his skeleton hand pulls the maiden down. All the wreaths of ruses, all the weight of corn, Ail the mmlic nf iron and coal, from earth a busuiij turn ; Ah the world of plenty, all the world of wealth — Gift to the Race, of God's own grace, and stolen away by stealth — 1 Pile them into 'figures'— bid statistics vaunt — While through the lies, with terrible eyeB, glares the spectre, Wa.it. A FIGHT FOR FILTH. BY TIN-POT CAPITALISTS ON A VIGILANCE COMMITTEE. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 23 June 1900

31 FIGHT FOR FILTH. ! BY TIN- POT CAPITALISTS I ON A VIGILANCE COM MITTEE. Last week, we briefly referred to a meeting of the above Committee which eventuated on Thurday evening, June 14. At that meeting there were pre sent : Messrs. D. Miller (in the chair), W. Winn, A. Fenwick, T. Brooks, A. Timbury, W. Stevens, H. E. Hol land, Dr. Doyle, and R. JonesMor gan (who appeared for the first time with credentials from the Shop Em ployees), The Executive reported that, in re ply to the Committee's motion, the Attorney-General had advised that the Newcastle Council's sewerage scheme should not be confirmed. That evidently rankled in the alder manic stomachs, as later developments will show. A question concerning a proposed lecture to be arranged by the medical men showed bad blood somewhere, for while it. was decided that the medical men on the Committee should prepare a lecture, and notwithstanding that the motion was carried some weeks back, one doctor had heard nothing of the matter fr...
